Affordable Action Cameras

Action camera is not something new and chances are, most of us have used them sometime in the past whether it is yours or your friend’s. They used to be a trendy item to have and carry around especially when GoPro was still dominating the market but today, they are more of a mainstream device that you can buy without having to think too much as they get cheaper. The question is whether it is wise to buy cheap cameras instead of aiming for the flagship ones.

The answer however, will vary among users because our needs and application can be very different as well. Cheap camera, as what you can expect, will not have an impressive result depending on what you expect from them yet, this is not always the case. In fact, there are many Chinese brands that are almost at the same level of performance to the leading brand but sold at the fraction of its cost. Of course they are not exactly “identical” but you can get much by compromising a little.

The difference however, is often located on the menu and overall video quality especially when you count the image stabilization because flagships models are usually more reliable in this part. They have a solid menu which is easy to understand, solid built quality, and among the best image stabilization you can currently have in the market. Another difference is often on how they capture details when in the presence of light or shadowy areas which can easily blurry or lost in common cheap cameras.

Shopping for Action Camera

Rather than the brand, we advise to choose the camera based on their capabilities or what they are offering at a certain price level. The first you may want to consider is probably their sensor since it is an integral part that affects the image quality especially if you are going for the 4K resolution yet, an action camera with larger sensor is usually more expensive as well so do match them with your budget. If you want to spend as low as possible, an HD 1080p camera will most likely fit best.

Performance is something you will know after using them but for those who plan to record long footage or carrying the camera along in their journey whether it is a travel through modern cities or finding waves to ride, the storage and built quality will matter as well. Most affordable action cameras have waterproof cases while the body itself is not sealed. What you may want to consider is higher resolution means higher file size so you may want to have backup memory when traveling.

About AKASO Brave 4 and V50 Pro

Depending on what you want from the camera, the options are almost unlimited out there now with new companies entering the market and competing with each other both in quality and price point. If you want to save time and have no strict budget range, going with the flagship models from the most popular brand like GoPro Hero 8 Black Vs 7 will be the quick way to have a good, reliable unit but, you have to spend quite some as well.

On the other hand, if you are willing to spare some time checking what those affordable options offer, chances are we’ll find something that is not expensive but works well too and this is what AKASO offers from their collection of pocket-friendly cameras. This brand may not be as popular as similar alternatives like Yi but they are also one of the best choices if what you look for is a cheap camera but not cheaply made or have cheap video quality.

AKASO also has quite the options to offer depending on which sits better in your preference but those wishing to record 4K footage will most likely love AKASO Brave 4 and V50 Pro. Both of them are two favorite options when people are looking for a good camera that can take good footage but won’t break the bank but, since they are different in price, some may also be confused about which to choose. While they claimed to be able to shoot up to 4K, in fact only one is native in it.

Being native in the resolution will make the camera overall more capable and reliable when handling the largest resolution but we will see it later on image quality whether this is true or not. The price gap between them is not many but can be meaningful for the performance latter. However, if 4K is not a must and budget needs to be kept as low as possible, we do think the Brave 4 is an already good option.

AKASO Brave 4 and V50 Pro Design

In the past all action cameras were looking very similar to each other and they probably look like the Brave 4 as well. As people demand better design, they are also evolving and newer cameras are looking like the V5 Pro. The prominent difference from the design is there is no textured grip anymore and there is no front monitor as well so the faceplate of V50 Pro is cleaner and overall smoother. Size wise, they are about the same however.

They also have the same 2-inch screen but the menu is different and in comparison the latter has smaller words but the menu is brighter and it is more modern as well. The Brave 4 is not touch-sensitive and both are too small for image viewing but decent if used just to check how the image will look like. The buttons are used to navigate the menu and while AKASO is not the best in built quality, these two seem robust and not flimsy at all.

AKASO Brave 4 and V50 Pro Image Quality

AKASO Brave 4 and V50 Pro are using different sensors and different chipset as well with Allwinner V3 and Sony CMOS 20MP compared to iCatch V50 and Panasonic 20MP sensor. In performance, they are good, but not amazing as well and from the image quality, personally we prefer the EK7000 which is also one of the best options in this price range. They are a bit similar to each other but in comparison the latter handle bright areas better if you will record in places where the lighting is not evenly spread.

Side by side the color seems brighter in Brave 4 but the V50 Pro is more natural and probably better for most people. They are equally capturing plenty of details but as you try to shake the camera, while none of them will come on par with GoPro Hero newest line, in our opinion the latter does seem to have improved a little bit. Another difference is probably their field of view which is adjustable up to 70-degree in the Brave 4 but only as narrow as 140-degree on the V50 Pro.

AKASO Brave 4 and V50 Pro Features

Just like most affordable cameras, AKASO Brave 4 and V50 Pro are not natively water-proof as they are not sealed but worry not because the case is already included in the box, in fact they include almost any accessories you will need to use the camera right out of the box. This includes a splash-proof remote to control the basic function of these cameras. While V50 Pro’s display is touch-sensitive, since it is too narrow we do prefer the buttons as it is faster.

They are including a rechargeable battery as well but the latter has just slightly higher capacity than those packed with your Brave 4 yet, we don’t think this little increase will not affect the performance noticeably. Chances are, we will be able to pull an hour with moderate use in any of these cameras.

AKASO Brave 4 and V50 Pro Connectivity

The last part we want to mention is their connectivity and what’s convenient about AKASO Brave 4 and V50 Pro is their wireless capabilities which makes it easy to share and edit the footage from your smartphone through their free mobile application. The Wi-Fi range is claimed to reach up to 10 meters and it is decent for common usage. If you need to show the footage on a larger screen then the HDMI port will come in handy too.

AKASO Brave 4 vs V50 Pro

These two are good action cameras for the price as they are equally reliable and the difference in footage quality is also not very much apparent besides how V50 Pro produces more natural colors and deals with light better. The more expensive option is also slightly better in handling shakes and featured a touch-sensitive display which can be convenient but less comfortable.
