Shopping for an Action Camera
Having a reliable device can go a long way both to help you with some works and just to support any kind of activities we have everyday including with an action camera. The trendy small compact camera is being a trend since several years ago where people are seen mounting their device on various objects and capturing their adventure from a different angle and giving its viewers a different perspective as well; different from what we used to see in the past.
If this device is attracting your attention as well, we are sure there are some parts that we have to at least know first before deciding to get one because while they have some shining parts that beat regular compact camera, there must be some drawback as well except the price.
- First, action cameras usually have a fixed field of view and this is what makes you get a wider coverage of anything being presented in front of the lens. In the past FOV is commonly fixed but today there are many cameras with adjustable FOV to let you pick how much area to capture during the filming and the narrower it gets, the closer we get to the center as well.
- There is also the FishEye effect which is such a huge trend back then and even smartphones have the effect or additional tool to create the kind of view yet today, we have so many ways to remove it if not desired through the main device of with some video editing software.
- Second necessary thing that we often look at an action camera is how sturdy it is because the initial use of the device to accompany extreme sport enthusiast when they want to capture and immortalize their activities. Some high end models like GoPro Hero 7 Vs Sony RX0 II are among the most durable cameras out there and also friendly with many types of water activities for the main unit is coming with waterproof protection already.
- Third important part you may want to keep in mind is the video capability because all people want to get the UHD 4K recording and if possible upgrade to the 8K yet, not all cameras can do the recording mode in native function so it is not going to give you the best of the quality. In general, cameras below $100 are not native in 4K and if it is necessary to have the quality, we do recommend to invest more on the budget.
About APEMAN 4K and GoPro Hero 7
For those who want to get an action camera, it is wiser to check the capabilities of the model first before shopping because it will save us some struggle when deciding on which to buy. Just like everything else, price will play an important role in affecting the unit’s quality and overall features so if you are an enthusiast who need the best option, it is better to get the high-end options on the market.
On the other hand, if you are a casual users, there are many great, affordable options as well so we don’t have to spend much just to get a backup camera for our main smartphone. If you are considering two models from these different spectrum, it is nice to see what a low budget camera like APEMAN 4K stand beside the current best action camera GoPro Hero 7. Both of them are promising 4K footage but the former is rating this quality at 24fps which mean it is not native yet.
On the other hand, Hero 7 is one of the best models we can get currently since it has been released last year despite those new units introduced by its competitors like Sony and DJI. It is the continuation of Hero line and a direct upgrade from the also equally popular Hero 6 but, if you ever used the older brother, there is no upgrade in terms of effective pixel or even frame per seconds because almost everything shiny about Hero 7, in this case the Black version is located inside.
We are talking about the new features planted by GoPro in their new camera and many people have found that these simple addition does play a huge role in terms of real life experience. The problem with a great camera like this one is their price range and this is why APEMAN 4K or A80 and any similar cameras on the price range is a great alternative to allow almost any people to enjoy the versatility of an action camera.
APEMAN 4K and GoPro Hero 7 Design
Comparing them from the outside, it is easy to decide which model is pricier because Hero 7 Black is one of the most well-made cameras today and it is clearly felt from the unit while APEMAN 4K is also very nice and felt sturdy but still retain the common design of an older action camera by having a textured sides which has now started to be removed by many other companies. There is a small analog display on the face area of GoPro to view some stats.
On the former this space is occupied by a single large mode button but the type of controls we have on action cameras are all available and since Hero 7 is using touch sensitive rear screen, it is more convenient to operate despite not as responsive as some newer smartphones. APEMAN 4K rear LCD screen is measured similar at around 2-inch but it is still not capable of touch function.
APEMAN 4K and GoPro Hero 7 Camera
Coming into the camera specification, it is already well-known that GoPro is using their own proprietary processor and this Hero 7 will have the same one as Hero 6 which is the GP1 chip while the APEMAN 4K is using Novatek 96660. As for the sensor, they are equally using those from Sony but have different series because the budget version is carrying IMX078 20MP sensor while the latter is equipped with IMX277, slightly higher than what we see on the older model with the same 12MP effective pixel.
Coming into the video recording mode, both of them are capable of recording at 4K but have different frame rates per second because now Hero 7 is already offering this UHD mode at 60fps while APEMAN is still at 24fps, similar to another affordable camera AKASO Brave 4. The lower resolution at 1080p on GoPro is also already at 240fps to give you another level of slow motion video while the other is upping at 60fps.
APEMAN 4K and GoPro Hero 7 Features
On the additional useful capabilities, both of APEMAN 4K and GoPro Hero 7 are featured with electronic image stabilization but we know from the start that the HyperSmooth is still among the top even in comparison with many other expensive cameras. The former however have Gyroscope to help users maintaining the footage so it can be more watchable but this feature is only applicable when you are shooting at 1080p and below and not possible to be used with its 4K mode.
The similar problem also took our interest in Hero 7 Black because the HyperSmooth is not applicable in 4K at 60fps but this is not the actual the case since we can still use it in this mode but the setting have to be in 16:9 format. As for the available FOV, we can adjust it in any of these cameras whether you want to get the full coverage of a scenery in front of the lens or crop it to view the center closer. In addition to HyperSmooth, GoPro Hero 7 Black also have SuperPhoto and new HyperLapse.
APEMAN 4K and GoPro Hero 7 Performance
The first thing we notice when comparing these two in terms of performance is the image stabilization because even when activated, the video shake too much in APEMAN 4K and it is making the footage can’t be watched for too long for it is dizzying. The HyperSmooth on the other hand works really well and it is one of the best footage with image stabilization we can get out there similar to using a physical gimbal.
For the footage color and contrast, there is pretty much more details in Hero 7 and the color seems to be more natural with great details. The APEMAN 4K produce a slightly “cold” effect on the footage and image but for the price range, it is still acceptably good especially for still image or when mounted in a solid surface like a car dashboard rather than carried while walking or biking.
Comparing budget item with highly rated models often ends the same way and it is what we experienced with APEMAN 4K and GoPro Hero 7. From the features and quality, it is clear that Hero 7 is the most capable camera among the two especially the image stabilization function and we are not counting the touch screen, better microphone, native waterproof, HyperLapse, and SuperPhoto yet. However, APEMAN 4K is almost 4 times cheaper than Hero 7 and as an affordable camera, the quality is acceptably good.
APEMAN 4K vs GoPro Hero 7
At this point we are sure you can decide to go with either of these cameras but for a recommendation, those who are more serious about the activity and will work their action camera to the fullest, we do see GoPro Hero 7 as a very reliable option but if you are only taking them for casual occasions and especially doesn’t plan to record while walking, APEMAN 4K is a more ideal and budget saving pick.
