Eken H9R: Design & Build

Right from the start, Eken H9R may strike you as an extremely typical action cam. It comes with a box-shaped plastic body, a wide-angle lens, a rear display, and a few physical buttons. Nevertheless, despite the plastic construction, the build quality is quite good. It feels solid and robust, and the buttons aren’t flimsy. See also: GoPro Hero vs Hero 7

On the front panel, you can find the wide-angle lens and the power/mode button. On the rear panel, there is a 2-inch LCD screen. However, it is not a touchscreen, so you will need to rely on the physical buttons to navigate through the menu screens. This is not too bad because the menu system is actually really simple. You won’t need to mash the buttons too many times to get what you want.

Then, there are the usual connectors that are expected from an action cam. Eken H9R has a Micro USB port, an HDMI port, and a Micro SD slot. The company recommends using a 16GB or 32GB memory card for the best performance.

The battery is removable. You can open the compartment to replace the battery. This is particularly useful when you are on a long trip and you run out of power. Just swap the battery with another one that is still full, and you are ready to continue.

Perhaps one of the biggest benefits of Eken H9R vs GoPro 7 is the number of included accessories. Eken H9R includes a waterproof housing, a mounting frame, and several mounts and adapters. With GoPro Hero 7, many of such items must be purchased separately. Eken H9R is not waterproof by itself, but the waterproof housing will allow you to dive with the camera up to 30 meters (98 feet) under water.

Eken H9R: Features

The menu system of Eken H9R is kind of boring because it doesn’t offer many unique capabilities. At least, all the basics are already available, and the camera can control them properly. You can change the resolution for photos and videos, and you can switch between the modes quickly.

The camera does have built-in Wi-Fi, which will enable you to connect it wirelessly to your smartphone. You need to install the Ez iCam mobile app, available for Android and iOS, in order to control the camera remotely. Note that the Android version can only provide remote access and real-time image preview, whereas the iOS version has a Live Stream function to YouTube and Facebook.

Eken H9R also has a built-in image stabilization. Well, the image stabilization of Eken H9R vs GoPro 7 is not exactly comparable, but it is still pretty good. It can deal with small vibrations to ensure smooth, stable clips. When we record a video while walking, the footage is stable and clear. It only struggles with extreme shakiness, such as when recording while off-roading with a bike.

Eken H9R: Performance & Image Quality

Eken H9R is marketed as a 4K camera. Indeed, the camera has a setting option that will allow you to record videos in the 4K resolution. However, this is not true 4K. Instead, it is interpolated from 1080p. So, you won’t really get the same image quality as the true 4K.

When tested, the 4K footage does show good colors and details, but it doesn’t look really sharp. It is also limited to 30fps.

However, the 1080p setting can record at 60fps. In this setting, the image quality is actually much better. The images are really sharp and detailed, and the colors are vivid and accurate. The high frame rate is beneficial for capturing fast actions. Additionally, Eken H9R is able to record in 720p at 120fps for creating slow-motion videos.

There is a slight blur in the edges of the scene, but this is not really noticeable. This is apparently the side effect of using a wide-angle lens on a relatively small image sensor. Nevertheless, the overall performance in broad daylight is good. Eken H9R doesn’t perform well in low-light conditions, but you can still use it to capture good images around sunset times.

The swappable battery is particularly beneficial because the battery life isn’t impressive. Eken H9R can only last for about 45 minutes when recording in 1080p at 60fps. So, you may want to carry a back-up battery whenever you are going out with the camera.

GoPro Hero 7: Design & Build

GoPro Hero 7 is the latest flagship model in the renowned brand’s line up. It is arguably the best action cam that you can get with money today. It has an excellent design, feature set, and overall performance. Enthusiasts and professionals will love it very much.

The design is slightly different from the previous generations. GoPro Hero 7 has introduced small tweaks, such as the more recessed lens position and the darker color. It is also said that GoPro Hero 7’s mic design has been improved as well to increase the audio clarity. The grippy rubberized finish that has been used since GoPro Hero 5 is still present.

One notable difference between Eken H9R vs GoPro 7 is the waterproofing. GoPro Hero 7 is already waterproof up to 10 meters by itself without requiring any additional housing. You can use it while swimming in the local pool, and it can also survive exposure to rain just fine. An additional housing called the Super Suit is still available as a separate purchase, waterproof up to 60 meters.

GoPro Hero 7 is really compact and lightweight. You can easily put it in your pocket. On the rear, there is a 2-inch touchscreen with an intuitive menu system. On the front, there is a small vice screen for showing essential information like recording duration and remaining battery, so you won’t need to flip the camera around when recording while putting yourself in the frame.

GoPro Hero 7: Features

GoPro Hero 7 offers a number of advanced features. First of all, it supports voice commands in multiple languages. You can tell the camera to start or stop a recording, capture photos, and change resolution, simply by saying so. This is extremely useful for hands-free and remote operation.

Of course, you can control the camera via your smartphone as well. Just connect the camera over Wi-Fi and open the GoPro mobile app, which is available for Android and iOS. You can access all the camera’s settings and features through the mobile app. In addition, GoPro Hero 7 comes with a new live stream function. For now, it can only live stream to Facebook, though the support for YouTube is said to be added soon.

GoPro has also provided a few additional apps with more advanced features. There is GoPro Quik for Android, iOS, and desktop, which will allow you to overlay GPS information as graphs or gauges on your videos – great for showing-off your speed and location. You can also add soundtracks and sync videos to their beats. There is also GoPro Splice for iOS with advanced editing capabilities, including the ability to fine-tune audio.

Inside the camera’s menu system, there are plenty of settings that you can customize. You can change the resolution, frame rate, and field of view. The Linear FoV is available for resolutions up to 2.7K. In the 4K setting, you can use the Wide FoV or the SuperView FoV.

Previous models already had good image stabilization, but GoPro Hero 7 has improved further with the HyperSmooth image stabilization. Unlike previous models, GoPro Hero 7 will allow you to use HyperSmooth while recording in 4K. This is really awesome. Now, capturing a stable 4K footage is actually possible.

GoPro Hero 7: Performance & Image Quality

You should not doubt the image quality of GoPro Hero 7. The 4K videos are very sharp and detailed. The color quality is impressive. It has an excellent dynamic range that allows different color gradations and shadow levels to be captured accurately. Even in low-light conditions, GoPro Hero 7 still performs like a beast. It can deliver good images with virtually zero noise.

If you want to record fast actions, recording in 4K is totally feasible. As mentioned above, you can benefit from the HyperSmooth image stabilization in this setting. You can use the 60-fps frame rate to ensure smooth and detailed movements. Meanwhile, for slow-motion videos, you can use either the 1080p/120fps setting or the 720p/240fps setting.

However, keep in mind that you can only record in 4K with HyperSmooth for about 30 minutes. Recording continuously for too long may cause the camera to overheat due to the huge amount of processing. But you can record in 1080p continuously just fine for up to 90 minutes.
