Action Camera

Our society is already used to the internet and it is sure helpful in almost every aspect of our life because it opens an unlimited window to new information and everyone can access it as long as there is compatible device and connection. In the past we are using them for learning and doing various information gathering but today, they are most prominently known to be a place where we get our entertainment thanks to the huge amount of different platforms built for public use.

One of them is video blogging which is very popular nowadays, recording or filming about various things from a more serious issues to those that capture the adventure of our favorite bloggers. In the past people are recording using their recorder whether it is a dedicated video recorder or a camera with video capability but today, especially for adventure filming and personal blog, action camera is replacing the old and more traditional way of solo filming thanks to its more compact size and more connectivity options.

Action camera is gaining a huge exposure several years ago and the pioneer will be GoPro with so many people are getting one to follow the trend. While many of them are quite expensive, there are also lots of Chinese products entering the market with far more affordable price, making the unit becoming more available for a wider consumers. The first reason why action camera is loved by many is because most of them have wide angle view or even the new 4K resolution.

With this we can capture better footage without having to get an actual expensive video recorder with the same capabilities. Second is the size and in our opinion this is the best reason to have one in your gear collection because being a compact camera means we can carry them easily during the journey or mount them on various setup to capture the moments in which will be more complicated when using a regular video recorder. Third, many of them are compatible with sporting equipment.

Most action cameras have specific casing to protect them while diving and some high-end models are even coming with a water-proofing rated straight out of the box. They also have many accessories inside the package so we can mount them on different places including in your sport bike or bicycle while touring. In addition, we can also use them as pet cam to record from unique angle and see what they see while playing around.

About GoPro Hero 7

If you are often doing some adventure out there or love recording live footage of certain activities, getting one will be a great decision. Since the demand of action camera is rising, there are lots of options out there from the most affordable to top shelves model that will ask quite the amount from your pocket. However, the best choice will be those in your budget range and have all the features or capabilities you need when recording later such as water proofing or 4K quality.

As everybody knows, GoPro is the first brand to look at when shopping for a new action camera because they are indeed one of the best in terms of quality and if you are in the market for a great action camera, the new Hero 7 will be a nice choice. As the name suggests, this is the continuation of the Hero 6 which is released earlier and if you ever used the previous model, this one will mostly be the same.

Some people may be disappointed when seeing that GoPro didn’t pack new pixels or boost the frame rates, but the company sure pay attention to real life experience when using their camera and this also means we are getting all the good things from the older model including the same 12MP sensor and of course the mesmerizing 4K at 60fps.

GoPro Hero 7 Design

Being a close brother, Hero 7 is very similar to the Hero 6 with the same fashion and rugged body combined with rubber as well but now the sides are just as smooth as the front instead of with ridges. This model is also coming in full black fashion which we actually do love yet, since it will be covered with case, it doesn’t make a great difference in use. The body is solid and both of the USB/HDMI and battery/card are nifty to ensure the water proofing.

GoPro Hero 7 Features

As it has been mentioned above, your new camera is coming with 12MP sensor and capable of taking 4K videos at 60fps but in addition, we can also record Full HD with a maximum rate of 240fps for slowed-down footage. What makes GoPro Hero 7 and even better camera than its predecessor is thanks to its HyperSmooth which is a form of video stabilization that the company claimed as the same as when using gimbal. It is also interesting that the company also said it is the best stabilization among “any camera”.

The HyperSmooth is different to a regular stabilization for now we can also use it when shooting at 4K, 60fps and the only time we can’t use it is when capturing Full HD footage at 240fps and 120fps since they can only use standard stabilization. Additionally, we also have TimeWarp that combines the idea of regular frame-by-frame time-lapse shooting with HyperSmooth and making it a stabilized hyperlapse and it means we can make time-lapse footage without utilizing tripod; in any movement we want.

Besides those interesting features, we are getting what called as SuperPhoto in GoPro Hero 7 which is similar to scene-intelligent auto option that we often found on regular camera. It is essentially automate a handful of useful features; those we don’t think of using when capturing photos.

About DJI Osmo Action

While GoPro is everyone’s first decision when purchasing an action camera, we also understand that it is not the most affordable out there and just like with anything, balancing the budget with the product is necessary in every situation to get us the best option. If you are looking for something that can come at the same level as the Hero 7, there is also another action camera from DJI with almost the same capabilities as this model called the Osmo Action.

DJI Osmo Action Design

When you place this camera side by side with Hero 7, we can instantly tell that they are taking so much from the popular camera since they are simply the same both from the shape and how they place two display on the unit. The price different doesn’t make Osmo Action a less quality camera because it is equally build to ensure the longevity and the waterproof metal frame is also coupled with grippy, textured rubber sides for your hand to hold it firmly.

DJI Osmo Action Features

Similar to the more expensive camera, this model is also packing an amazing 12MP sensor with ultra-wide angle lens and 148-degree field-of-view of f/2.8 aperture but also has a slightly bigger battery at 1300mAh compared to only 1220mAh. It can also capture video with lower resolution or 4K as you need with 4:3 o4 16:9 aspect ratio at 60fps combined with DJI owned image stabilization called RockSteady. For a fast action, Osmo Action is offering 8x slow motion video with its sensor and manual exposure control.

What’s great, not only the screen to control operation is touch-sensitive, the front screen is also colored unlike the analog display we get from Hero 7. It’s said image stabilization is even better than GoPro in real-life experience but, when used in 4K setting, there will be a delay for about half a second on viewfinder display. In addition, while it is very similar to GoPro, they have different accessories and the mobile app is not as good as the other, making syncing device is a bit more frustrating.

Comparison

Now, let’s compare the popular GoPro Hero 7 with DJI Osmo Action. As it has been mentioned above, both of them are competitors at the same level but comparing the two great action cameras, Osmo Action is more affordable, have colored front display, nicer image stabilization, bigger battery yet, it don’t have live streaming ability and the screen lag is also annoying while some users also complain about the over-sharpening without manual adjustment to handle.
