Lots of people are taking pictures everyday which mostly consisting of self-photograph or the scenery and events happening around them. Taking pictures becomes a habit today where everyone is familiar with how to take a better image from certain angle and how to create an overall more pleasing result using just their smartphone camera. Our always connected world probably playing a role in creating this trend but it also driving the demand of various devices along its way to the top; both for casual and more serious users.

Video blogging is very popular nowadays that people can upload and stream from different platforms on the internet. We can use a standard phone camera to take both images and footage but of course not everyone will be satisfied with the result or even operation. Video recorder and compact digital camera have their own era but today, our main goal is become convenient with a simple operation and versatile enough to be used for different applications thus, we only need one device for different activities.

One of the most popular type of camera today besides the highly capable DSLR and Mirrorless cameras, we also have another more casual action camera which is becoming a trend several years ago. It is still very well used today because of their versatility but not as hyped as back then. The best thing about action camera is that they can took amazing footage, still images, and also rigid enough to handle rough handling and conditions while being compact to be mounted on different objects/positions.

Choosing a good action camera is also similar to how you choose a good digital camera because the main goal is a useful results be it footage or still image. The first thing you may want to check when shopping for one is the image quality such as the resolution and frame rate. The higher model will mostly offer a native 4K resolution while the cheaper options usually interpolated their resolution. Higher frame rates also creates better footage so at least 30fps is a must have.

Next is the field of view because while most of them will offer wide angle view, the one that offer an option to choose between the available FOV is a better choice to let you decide how the results should be. For those who are going to use the unit for an active sports or adventure, the body must be robust and if possible look for the one with certain IPX rating for water and dust proofing. Last but not least is battery life so you can be more aware of how long we can use the device.

About GoPro Hero 8 Black and 7

If you already have an idea on how the action camera needs to be or which model will serve the best purpose, now is the time to see what the market has to offer because there are so many of them out there. To get the best choice you may want to decide the price range that we can afford or the brand that we want to shop from. While amazing cameras are always expensive and mostly come from popular or well-known manufacturers, it doesn’t mean those unpopular brands will be less useful.

However, there are brands which is offering a quality better than its peers and as almost everyone already knew, when talking about action cameras, we are also talking about GoPro. Yes, this is the most popular action camera brand out there and the reason why is not only they are the one who make the device famous but also because they are the pioneer in this consumer level action camera. This brand offers one of the best image quality and technology among other similar brands.

They always offer a new model almost every year and the recent ones are GoPro Hero 8 Black and 7 which are all highly rated as action cameras worth your attention and budget. Latest release by the company usually only upgrading some of its predecessor’s weaknesses but in some models the refinement are more prominent than the others. In the case of these two latest models however, it seems there is not much to talk about because the newer brother seems to be just slightly over the older one.

Their price range is not too far from each other but you will find some interesting new features or addition on the new GoPro 8 which was released not long ago in October 2019. Side by side you won’t find any prominent difference between the GoPro Hero 8 Black and 7 but this is because most of the improvements are not visible. One of our most favorite quality of the new camera is actually the new video stabilization that we will talk about more below.

GoPro Hero 8 Black and 7 Design

As you can see from the sample picture above, from the design alone, both of these action cameras are very similar to each other when you view them from the front but side by side from the whole body, you will notice that Hero 8 Black is actually thinner in comparison with its lens housing not as protruding as the Hero 7. What’s upgraded here is that the new camera now incorporate a mount into the camera body itself.

Besides making the camera slightly smaller than its older brother, now we can also swap the battery and memory without removing the camera from the mounting since we no longer need mounting frame or case. Another difference is Hero 8 Black can no longer remove its cover glass when you need to install filter unlike the Hero 7 thus you will need an adapter to use filter. Read also: GoPro Hero 7 Vs 6.

GoPro Hero 8 Black and 7 Still Image Quality

Moving further, let’s see what GoPro Hero 8 Black and 7 can offer and starting from the tech side, they are still built around the same technology with the same custom GP1 processor which has been used since Hero 6 yet, it is also better to offer various new upgrades into the camera capabilities. Similarly, both of them are capable of taking 4K footage at 60 frame per second. As for the stills, they are equally capturing 12MP pictures and both have the same dynamic range.

The slight improvement is that the Hero 8 Black is dealing with HDR ghosting really well if you are capturing by hand held operation only. In addition, if you are zooming the picture to the furthest, image on its newer brother is sharper. What’s amazing is the new SuperPhoto that will create a more natural result with darker black and overall less color mapping. If you put the image side by side, the result will seem a little bit different with the Hero 7 giving slightly “colder” tone.

GoPro Hero 8 Black and 7 Video Quality

Moving to the video mode, the image quality of GoPro Hero 8 Black and 7 are fairly the same but the difference will become noticeable when you turn the new HyperSmooth 2.0 new stabilization on. The Hero 6 was struggling to keep the horizon level and the newer model does a pretty good job while the newest camera is improving them prominently. Here you can notice that its stabilization is working well and better, making the footage looking like it was taken with a gimbal.

GoPro Hero 8 Black and 7 Audio Quality

Another point we want to talk about is their audio quality because it seems to be improved on the newer model as well and in this side, you can notice how these two latest cameras working better in capturing audio if compared to the older GoPro like Hero 6. If you are taking video with the two side by side, the audio quality is much better in Hero 8 because in its older version you will hear the sound like it was dampened probably to reduce the wind noise.

Hero 8 Black is now capturing your audio not only with improvement on wind reduction but it also improves your sound clarity so taking footage outdoors in windy situation is not much of a challenge anymore right out of the box.

GoPro Hero 8 Black and 7 Accessories

The last point we want to talk about is the accessories because along with the release of Hero 8 Black, the new camera has a new set of collection called Mods. The Display Mod will add a selfie screen into your device; the Media Mod will add a shotgun microphone with 3.5mm jack, HDMI out port, and even two cold shoes; and the last Light Mod will add a small LED light which you can attach to the Media Mod or any GoPro mount.

Both of these cameras are highly capable and in short the Hero 8 Black is indeed a more capable version of the Hero 7. What’s different is almost on every aspect with the better still image quality especially when added with SuperPhoto since you can get slightly sharper and overall more natural color here while the footage quality is also nicer in Hero 8 Black with its warmer color, better image stabilization including much better audio quality. In addition we have various new accessories to add into Hero 8 capability.

All in all we can pick any of these action cameras and still be satisfied with the performance but if you are willing to spend more, we highly recommend getting the GoPro Hero 8 Black because it is an overall better device with better performance and results.
