Action Camera

Almost all of us have a smartphone today no matter from which price point it is and all of them have at last one built-in camera for various purposes. They are very useful for snapping a picture, recording video on the go and updating your friends or family about what you are currently doing. For general purposes they are very much capable depending on how many we can spend on them but for a recording activity which requires active movement, a smartphone is not an ideal gear to use.

First, our smartphone’s battery is only going to last for several hours when used for recording and other basic purposes especially when they are always connected to the internet so draining their battery is not a wise decision to do as you will need it for other functions. Second, they are fragile and easy to get damaged. This is especially true for action enthusiasts as they will move a lot or even mount the camera in an object and at a difficult angle to get the best recording result.

Third is they may not have the special effects or modes we usually have in dedicated cameras. Newer flagships add lots of features in their camera phones such as better stabilizers but they are often not as advanced as what you can get on for example GoPro.

Affordable and Expensive Action Camera

Action cameras are great choices if you are often recording and taking pictures without having to scarify the smartphone’s memory and battery. In the past there are only a few of them but today there are tons of new brands competing in their respective sub-market. We call it like that because we have affordable, mid-range, and high-end action cameras today. Some may ask whether an expensive camera is worthy but, it all comes back to the user since not all of us will have the same opinion.

We recommend to match with what you will be doing and budget range. Affordable options like Apeman A80 Vs A79 are suitable for travelers who want to have dedicated cameras to accompany their vacation and any casual users who are not very serious especially in content making or sharing it for a wider audience. If you will be uploading the result and focusing on a more active recording, an expensive camera will most likely produce better footage.

All action cameras have small sensors and hence they are very limited in terms of producing the best result but, those in higher markets will also give crisp images even when you zoom in and are not overly saturated that will make your skin appear orange. Personally, what we always aim for in flagship action cameras is their image stabilization because cheap models are not going to deliver good performance on this side.

About GoPro Hero 8 and DJI Osmo Action

If you are here then it means a budget smartphone will not be sufficient. There are various brands that offer good but still fairly affordable action cameras for your activities today and we indeed have more than one or two options. These companies are competing both on price and product’s capabilities which makes them have to be as efficient as possible. Performance wise, those in similar price range will often have identical image quality as well.

If your budget range is from $200-$300, GoPro and DJI are within the range and even their current popular model is also among this price range. They are probably two of the most popular brands if you are looking for good quality, good performance action camera but in our opinion they do have similar and almost the exact strength which makes it a bit confusing to choose in between. Overall, you will not disappoint with their flagship cameras as they are very well performing.

Two of their newest cameras are GoPro Hero 8 and DJI Osmo Action are two great choices to go for. We are sure almost everyone is familiar with these two because of how popular they are and it is also understandable why they are often compared since you will get both good and bad sides from the two. Between the two however, the latter is more affordable and probably will give you more value for the money we spent.

They are ideal for various types of applications whether you are shooting footage during your travel to unique cities all around the world, recording your adventure on a dirt bike, recording footage of you riding a wave, or when jumping out of a plane to skydiving. They will produce great images and are comparable to each other but side by side you may prefer one over the other depending on personal preferences.

GoPro Hero 8 and DJI Osmo Action Design

When you line them next to each other and DJI out of its case, this camera is actually slimmer in comparison to Hero 8 but they will look the same once you put the case as it needs them when being mounted. The new built in flipping mount of GoPro is convenient and secured but it is also slightly wobbly so we don’t think dirt bike riders will trust it. While Hero 8 doesn’t have a removable lens protector anymore, OSMO Action lets you remove and replace it in case it cracks or is damaged.

Another prominent difference from the design and exterior only is their screen because DJI brings a wider display here and just like everyone else, we prefer this one over the thick bezel GoPro has. The menu also looks more modern in the latter and what’s amazing is we get two displays on each panel; front and rear. It can’t be used altogether but at least we can do self-cam without using the smartphone’s screen. In build quality they are rigid but in comparison Osmo Action somehow feels more robust.

GoPro Hero 8 and DJI Osmo Action Specification

Moving further, let’s check what GoPro Hero 8 and DJI Osmo Action can offer and as a camera in this price range you can rely on them for almost anything. They are equally native in 4K and can push it up to 60 frames per second as well while the 1080p is even as fast as 240 frames per second and in between you can choose their 2.7K as well. Similarly, their resolution is 12MP and for the field of view Hero 8 is carrying this Superview which boasts 170 wide-angle while the latter is topping at 145 degree.

GoPro Hero 8 and DJI Osmo Action Image Quality

That’s is a short spec on what these cameras can offer and moving to the image quality, you will love these two. Both of them are very comparable to each other and side by side they are equally amazing but slightly different as well. If you have an older GoPro, we are sure you can imagine how the color looks like in this camera and Hero 8 stays true to their predecessors where colors are a little bit more saturated and overall give a warmer nuance to your image.

On the other hand, DJI Osmo Action is more balanced than and not as punchy as the other but details are similar on both. This type of image is better for those who will do post processing themselves but if you are like us who have no time or just not confidence about the editing skill, GoPro is more convenient and in our opinion their color will look better for the majority of people.

GoPro Hero 8 and DJI Osmo Action Image Stabilization

Another side we want to compare is their image stabilization because this is where expensive action cameras are going to feel like night and day to those below $100. They have HyperSmooth and RockSteady respectively as the name of their stabilization and these are amazing but Hero 8 has Boost function yet this can’t be applied at the top 60fps 4K but, HyperSmooth is still available. Both footage looks very stable but at the top mode without Boost GoPro seems slightly shakier than DJI.

GoPro Hero 8 and DJI Osmo Action Audio

The last comparison we want to talk about is their audio quality from the built-in microphone on both cameras. It seems Hero 8 is better than the former cameras but this one tends to capture much more as well which makes it not ideal to be used in windy situations as the wind reduction is not as effective as what you can get from Osmo Action. This camera slightly damped your voice but the result is impressive wind reduction which makes your voice sounds clearer.

GoPro Hero 8 vs DJI Osmo Action

GoPro Hero 8 and DJI Osmo Action are great cameras and you will like any of them but everything will come down to which you are more comfortable with. Image wise while DJI makes you look paler, GoPro makes your skin yellower and in still image while it is not noticeable Hero 8 has sharper shots yet tend to produce noise as well especially in darker settings in which DJI still gives you pretty delicate details. Sound quality wise as well, Osmo Action has better wind reduction.
