Action Cameras

The video content that we see on the internet can be recorded through various devices whether it is a professional camera, a compact camera, or the smartphone. The device will play a huge role on the image quality that we can see through our screen though smartphones are much more capable today, they are not yet as versatile as the actual camera. For a camera, they can be made to focus on still images or video recording, and sometimes both.

Action cameras are one that are made with video recording in mind or the main focus of the device, the same to those cameras we mount or find on a drone, their purpose and design is made for capturing video. Just like with many other fairly new devices, there is always a hype and for action cameras, they may no longer be as interesting as before but the market still needs new and advanced options to replace their older device. In addition, video content is a trendy segment nowadays so a capable camera is very important.

The way an action camera works makes it possible to use them in so many different setups. As the name suggests, they are ideal for action recording but depending on the users, we can use it like any compact camera. For example, the new Insta360 Go 2 which is a very small and very interesting piece of device. You can read about it in our Insta360 One X2 Vs Go 2 and the best thing about this camera is it is very small, almost about the size of a pen drive.

This way we can wear it like a necklace or holding the case and using a tripod if needed. It has a magnetic base and with the proper attachment, we can put it on our shirt while doing the activity such as flying a drone or walking down the night market in your new travel destination. In addition, they are also very easy to use and chances are we will get a hold of how to record or take still pictures with them in no time.

Unlike a professional camera that uses the live view to compose the image, an action camera is relying on your phone to preview the footage but we can use the rear screen as well. In the more casual application we do think they can be a great addition for your phone because it feels like having an extension of the device. For example we can put it somewhere and can take pictures or record all the people in one frame while the control is done from the phone.

About GoPro Hero 9 and Insta360 One R

Action cameras are fun and they are easy to use but, there is another type of compact camera that you may want to try and yes, this is the 360 degree cameras. As the name suggests they use two lenses that will capture two sides of the story at the same time and the software will have to combine it. In most cases they are not seamless but the fun of it is what makes 360 cameras a great alternative if you are bored with typical wide angle footage.

Talking about action cameras means talking about the prominent names in the market as well. While we have brands like AKASO and APEMAN to consider on the budget range, for those who want to optimize the image quality or need the professional result, GoPro and Insta360 are the favorite of countless creators. These brands are prominent for their amazing cameras and currently have both regular action cams as well as the 360 variants. The choice is all yours because some of them are quite versatile to be both.

GoPro just renewed their line with Hero 9 which now accompany MAX as the current flagship from the brand. It is sold at a current price of $380 when this comparison is written while the single lens of One R is at $430 and the Twin version is $480; both are .99 but we just round them up. The previous argument that it is best to spend on the more affordable One R is not as simple anymore because Hero 9 has become much cheaper than when it was first launched at $449.99.

This makes the comparison between GoPro Hero 9 and Insta360 One R becomes a lot more reasonable to go for the Hero 9 if what you look for is a regular action camera. But, if you want a system that is upgradeable into a 360 camera the modular mechanism of One R allows you to add three different lenses here, one of them is dual side and the other is a one-inch sensor type.

GoPro Hero 9 and Insta360 One R Design

Before seeing what the GoPro Hero 9 and Insta360 One R can offer, let’s see the unit first. As it has been mentioned above, the One R is modular so the system is detachable and there are two main parts here with one of them being the display and the other being the lens. Both are attached on a base that will also support the mounting. It is low profile and very compact just like most action cameras out there but do check the variant you pay for since there are few of them.

On the other hand the Hero 9 is very similar to the Hero 8 with very little upgrades from the outside and the most noticeable difference is probably the addition of a front color screen which is very useful when you want to monitor the recording from the front of the camera.

GoPro Hero 9 and Insta360 One R Specs

Now for the most important part, let’s see what the GoPro Hero 9 and Insta360 One R can offer starting from the specs and as an upgraded version, 4K is probably not enough for both GoPro and Insta360 so they let these cameras record at 5K instead. The difference is that One R has a wider angle since Hero 9 is only 155 degree and the latter is 180 degree or full 360 degree when you add the twin lens. At the highest resolution they can only do 30 fps but the 4K is already up to 60 fps.

GoPro Hero 9 and Insta360 One R Image Quality

Next let’s see the image quality on both cameras and as you expected, they are similarly amazing. One thing about GoPro is that they often boost the color so the contrast is usually higher than many other similar cameras which is why the footage comes out slightly darker here compared to the One R. If you can spend on the 1-inch mod for One R, we highly recommend this system because it can produce arguably better footage than Hero 9.

The One R with 1-inch sensor mod produces a more natural color which is vibrant but closer to the real object and if you want to pixel peeping, the amount of details this larger sensor can cover is also better. What GoPro is still leading is the microphone part because they are still the best in this category and in comparison Hero 9 is superb out of the camera even in windy situations. The sound quality is still more useful than most action cameras using their internal microphone.

GoPro Hero 9 and Insta360 One R App

Another important part that is worth noticing in GoPro Hero 9 and Insta360 One R is their workflow. Depending on how you prefer to use the camera, some people may like to use their computer while some want to directly work on the phone. Both of them are carrying a simple yet useful app that you can use to edit the footage directly and while this is probably more limited than what your computer software can do, it is a great way to share them on the go.

Gopro Hero 9 vs Insta360 One R

Both GoPro Hero 9 and Insta360 One R are impressive cameras and when the Hero 9 was first launched, many people compared it with the One R which was cheaper at the time and is more versatile as it can do single or dual lens shooting. Almost a year later now, the Hero 9 is much more affordable while the price for One R is still pretty stable so it is actually more expensive. From the image quality they are on par, coming with the same 5K at 30fps or 4K at 60fps.

The One R does have a wider field of view and is more versatile since you can add three different lenses here, specifically the dual lens and 1-inch sensor lens. In comparison the 360 system is more affordable than MAX but as a regular action camera, Hero 9 is a complete package in a more affordable price point.

Conclusion
