GoPro is a prominent name in the action camera market and they are still leading in terms of providing customers with their high-end and reliable compact cameras such as the new GoPro MAX Vs GoPro 9. All of the new cameras from this brand are impressive but they are not the same to each other so before deciding the option, it is wise to consider what they can offer and what you want to have from the device in order to shop better.
In this comparison, we are going to talk about:
- Why Using Action Camera

- How are the Specs of GoPro MAX and GoPro 9
- How are the Image Quality of GoPro MAX and GoPro 9
- How are the Image Stabilization of GoPro MAX and GoPro 9

You don’t need to pay a lot just to get a decent image quality because chances are your smartphone camera is already good enough for typical daily use such as capturing the moment with friends and family or just for recording content for your social media account. But, investing in a dedicated camera can improve the quality of the image a lot including how you will use the camera, especially for action shooting or if you will be recording and making a long footage to edit.
You can choose any type of camera out there that can help with the recording or shooting purpose and action camera is one of the most versatile choices to go for. This compact digital camera is everywhere you travel for the obvious reasons, they are small, they are rugged, and they are easy to use. Just press the recording or shooting button and you are done. There is not much to do here in terms of manual adjustment like with a mirrorless or DSLR but it is a great thing for most people.
Action camera’s main advantage is on the body itself which is how they are created to be very small, about the same size as your typical computer mouse. This way it allows users to carry them almost anywhere, just put it in the bag or pocket and you are ready to go. The small form factor also allows it to be mounted on various things using the simple mount they mostly always come with. It gives users a freedom to achieve different angles and different methods of shooting unique shots or footage.
A camera is only as good as the image quality and this side may vary but you can find plenty of amazing cameras at a surprisingly affordable price range nowadays such as the AKASO V50X Vs V50 Elite. When it comes to action cameras, the shopping process should be easier because we can just look at the resolution and frame rates including some necessary features such as image stabilization to know whether the camera will fit your preference or not.
You will most likely get more by paying more so even though two cameras have the same specs, it is not always the case that you will find them at the exact same quality if they are offered at a different price range. Another great thing about action cameras is they are easy to use while also working well with your smartphone so they can complete each other but still work on their own if needed.

About GoPro MAX and GoPro 9
You have the freedom to choose any of the cameras that seem to work best in your application but if you want to shop conveniently and still get a reliable camera for daily or travelling purposes, GoPro is always a good option to select your camera from. This brand is well-known and often the go-to of new buyers because their name is still a synonym for an action camera even after years the device has been familiar among a wide range of users.
What’s impressive from this brand is how good their cameras are, along with the software they use to process and offer various features that are not always present in the competitors. The only drawback in our opinion is their price point which of course is more expensive than most action cameras in the market. Yet, if price is not a concern we highly recommend their cameras because chances are you will also love their image quality and ease of use, especially with some interesting features to try shooting with.
Just like most companies, to stay relevant in the market they have to always upgrade the products from time to time and among the newest from the catalog, we have GoPro MAX and GoPro 9 which the latter was just released in September last year, almost a year already. Both of them are amazing cameras on their own but not actually marketed for the same type of users because the MAX is a 360 degree camera so even though it is certainly able to capture regular footage, it will be a waste of budget if you will not use the feature.
Currently GoPro MAX and GoPro 9 are two of the most expensive cameras from the brand with reasons that they are also the most advanced yet not all of us will be doing the same activity of recording so it is best to consider what you will be using them for. In comparison, shooting with just one lens will give you a better image quality from the GoPro 9 or Hero 9 while the MAX gives you the freedom to play around with the footage and get creative with it.
GoPro MAX and GoPro 9 Design
Even from the unit, you can already tell what makes the MAX one of the most expensive action cameras today and yes, this is because the device carries two lenses instead of one like most cameras due to its ability to shoot 360 footage. The camera will be taller as well installed side by side and to improve the Hero 8, now the Hero 9 is coming with a new front screen which not only used to show you the stats but also acting as a front screen when you shoot handheld.
What we always love from GoPro is their robust build quality and as you can expect the two are equally waterproof to protect the component inside without the need for external casing. In comparison the Hero 9 is about 55 mm tall while MAX is 69 mm and for the width Hero 9 is wider at 71 mm compared to 64 mm. Similar to most GoPro cameras, the layout for control on these cameras stay the same with a microphone at the front, a status light, a shutter button at the top, and folding mount on their base.
GoPro MAX and GoPro 9 Specs
Moving further, let’s see what GoPro MAX and GoPro 9 can offer starting from the basic specs. They are coming with impressive capability of recording at 6K or 5.6K stitched and 5K regular video side by side. This way the MAX sounds like the better camera but remember that this amount of pixel is spread for the full 360 view so they will be further or not as packed as a regular wide angle 170 degree of the latter.
It also doesn’t mean you can’t capture with only one lens in MAX because we certainly can yet the maximum resolution for this Hero mode is only 1440p or 1080p. The Hero 9 also seems to come with more still picture modes compared to the older cameras such as with SuperPhoto and Improved HDR, burst mode, as well as continuous photo.
GoPro MAX and GoPro 9 Image Quality
Now let’s talk about the image quality side by side from GoPro MAX and GoPro 9. What we notice first is that the GoPro 9 cropped quite a lot of your footage compared to MAX so in comparison your object will also appear to be closer. The colors also come out differently with MAX being the more saturated or prominent one while Hero 9 looks more natural. Since the later camera also has closer pixels, overall the image quality will look better out of the device.
GoPro MAX and GoPro 9 Image Stabilization
Lastly we want to talk about the image stabilization in GoPro MAX and GoPro 9 since they are also not the same. First is not specifically image stabilization but both can do horizon lock that keeps the object at the original orientation even as you turn the camera 360 degree which is what you will get with the MAX but the Hero 9 stops at certain degree with the original lens, unless you attach the external lens mod which will help the camera to do the same trick.
For the actual image stabilization, we recommend shooting with MAX at 360 since this is where the camera will show its best stabilization. Side by side we do think they are on par with each other and as far GoPro always has one of the best or often the best stabilization among similar action cameras.
Gopro Max vs Gopro 9
In comparison both GoPro MAX and GoPro 9 are impressive choices. There are other differences that we don’t put here such as the microphone quality which is better and cleaner from the Hero 9 but as far as the image quality and ease of use, the two are different cameras for different types of users. What you will get from Hero 9 is high-res footage, with incredible stabilization, microphone, and also various shooting modes.
What you will get from GoPro MAX is the freedom to be the director of your own footage, the 360 view requires work on the computer so it is not as straightforward as regular wide angle footage but it is fun and unique.
You can go amazing with any of these cameras as we don’t have any bad options here. But, for those who just want the best action camera and don’t plan on working with 360 footage, the GoPro 9 or Hero 9 is the more versatile and easy to use for most people.
