Action cameras are interesting but more than how trendy the device is, they are convenient and useful. 360 Cameras

Action cameras have been around for quite some time now and most people must be already familiar with how they work. This is exactly a digital camera that we used to carry in the pocket while traveling back then but is much smaller. The way they work is also the same but instead of composing the image from their LCD screen; we often use our smartphone to view the footage. In addition, instead of being held on its own, we use at least a handheld tripod for handheld shooting.

At some point people probably get bored of the regular action camera and want to experience different types of footage or pictures so panoramic mode is seen as a new way to capture the scenery and event in front of you. Panoramic camera itself is not a new technology because the first mass produced tool was already around since the 1898 called Al-Vista. However, the idea probably didn’t capture as much attention until VR was becoming more common and video content is a growing trend on the internet.

360 cameras are unique from the regular action cameras such as AKASO Brave 7 LE Vs GoPro Hero 8 not only for the type of footage they are recording or taking but also the way people are using this type of camera. The most prominent thing is it gives a fuller view of what’s around you to the people who probably don’t have the chance yet to experience it, such as when you visit a new place or if you want to describe the ambience and how it feels being in the situation.

Being able to capture a 360 degree footage means it gives a first person point of view experience and this is quite new when this type of camera was still fresh on the market. The tools they come with are also playing a role in encouraging people to try the system because manufacturers give them the software to make re-framed spherical video also viewable on more common displays like TV or smartphones. This is actually possible with regular cameras but we have to do the post processing using other software.

Gear VR and Google Cardboard are cool but they are not as desired anymore today and so, the amount of viewers who can get the most experience out of 360 footage is not that prominent. What they are often viewed as is a square, two dimensional 16:9 frame footage. The real charm of 360 footage is in how the creator is designing or directing their content because there is so much we can do with them both from a smartphone app or the computer such as setting an angle, pan, or cutting and switching between footage.

About GoPro MAX and Insta360 One X2

If you are ready to put effort into working on the footage later or are just bored of how standard action cameras capture their footage, getting a 360 camera is a great idea. They will be less versatile and convenient but are fun to explore with, especially for creatives such as content makers who are focusing on providing a fuller experience for their audience, including realtors as well in the professional world. While the device is not as hyped as several years back, we still have more than enough to consider.

Some brands are already leaving the market for the lack of demand and currently the two that are still quite strong are probably GoPro and Insta360. These brands have a firmer grip for their consistent collection, especially GoPro which is still the best action cameras in the market, thanks for being always updated with the new tech and how they improved the product from time to time to catch up with the demand. Their new Hero 9 was also an impressive camera while not so much different from the previous flagship.

Some of the new 360 cameras also come from these two such as the GoPro MAX and Insta360 One X2 but in comparison the former is a year older so there is probably some difference especially in the software yet, even today the MAX is still one of the GoPro flagship cameras, not only for its price point but also the ability. Price wise they are pretty high, mostly cost more than $400 which makes the cameras enthusiasts oriented rather than casual users.

If the MAX was an improvement over the Fusion, the One X2 was also an improvement from the original camera. It seems like they are the refinement of the previous devices which makes the two even more reliable and powerful. As it has been mentioned above, the charm of 360 cameras is their freedom of how you design the video and this is what GoPro MAX and Insta360 One X2 are carrying for their users.

GoPro MAX and Insta360 One X2 Design

Down to the one of the most attractive parts of these cameras, both of them are rugged and have a well-built quality as well as waterproof but the MAX is at 5 meters while One X2 is at 10 meters. Of course the prominent difference is on the shape and form factor of these cameras because the native looking Insta360 is quite unique by being shaped like a lighter, elongated from top to bottom while also very narrow and MAX on the other hand is similar to most action cameras.

Both have this rubbery feel on the outside which is prone to get dust and small particles to stick but it enhances the grip slightly, just in case you will hold the camera with bare hands. For a preview or just seeing how the angle of the shot, they have a small built-in display on the unit and since they also have dual lens system, the camera will shoot at both sides at the same time so there is no need to add another lens when shooting vertically like in some 360 degree cameras.

GoPro MAX and Insta360 One X2 Specs

Now for the most important part, let’s start with the basic specs of GoPro MAX and Insta360 One X2. With MAX, you can record a full 360 video at 5.7K 3fps and 3K 60fps compared to One X2 which also shoots 4K at 50fps and 3K at 100fps. What’s a bit more convenient in case you want to use the camera for regular shooting is the feature that allows both cameras to also have a single lens mode which uses only one of their lenses. This mode can record at 1440p at 60fps but One X2 can record HD at 120fps.

GoPro MAX and Insta360 One X2 Image Quality

Next is for the image quality and the focus of both cameras is recording 360 footage so they are natively best in this part but, it doesn’t mean the video will come out identical from the two. For example the One X2 is capable of shooting at 25 or 24fps as well and this is not available for the MAX in case the situation where you shoot can create the flickering effect that other speed may introduce. Another one is One X2 actually shoots at a higher bit than MAX yet, personally we like the processing of GoPro.

In comparison between GoPro MAX and Insta360 One X2, the resolutions will be almost the same but zooming in we feel like the One X2 slightly sharpens the image and during night application, the MAX also creates less noise than the other camera. However, this is only visible when you zoom in closer to a further object on the footage and in their initial size the two are already very impressive.

GoPro MAX and Insta360 One X2 Features

Lastly we want to talk about the features in which the One X2 is covering more here, probably because it is a newer camera so they can put a lot of things not present on previous options. One of them is HDR mode where the camera can improve the dynamic range to make the footage looks better and it can also shoot in Log mode which gives more freedom for post processing, especially if you will color correct it later.

Gopro Max vs Insta360 One X2

Both cameras are amazing and our favorite is they can be used like regular action cameras as well. The differences are mostly because One X2 is a newer camera so there are lots of improvements here, starting from the higher frame rates and higher bit rate, to the more shooting features to improve the user experience. What’s better in MAX is probably the microphone and GoPro color processing which in our opinion looks slightly closer to our taste.

- Three Cameras in One: Maximize your creative freedom. With MAX you can shoot traditional Hero-style video and photos or capture immersive 360 footage. Vlog to the max with shotgun-mic performance and a front-facing screen
- Max HyperSmooth: MAX gives you unbreakable stabilization by using 180-degree capture as the ultimate buffer
- Live Streaming in 1080p: Shoot in HERO mode and share while you’re there. Live stream in 1080p on social, get Max HyperSmooth stabilization as you broadcast via the GoPro app and save footage to your SD card to check out later

- The Pocket Camera Crew: With just one device, shoot first in every direction with super 5.7K 360 capture and then choose your favorite angle later. Or pick just one lens with Steady Cam mode for ultra-stable wide angle footage.
- FlowState Stabilization: Better-than-ever stabilization and horizon leveling algorithms keep your shots steady—no gimbal needed.
- Invisible Selfie Stick: Shoot with the Invisible Selfie Stick and then watch it disappear in your edit. Capture easy drone-like angles and third-person perspectives with the flick of a wrist.
- IPX8 Waterproof: Insta360 ONE X2 is waterproof to 10 meters (33ft). Take it out in a rainstorm or surfing without a case.

You can go amazing with any of them, based on what you want to achieve but based on the comparison we do think the Insta360 One X2 is better for the budget as it is more affordable and equally capable in video quality but also offers more in the system.
