360 Degree Cameras

In the world of video content, you may be wondering how those people capture their footage in real life. Of course we have advanced smartphone cameras or dedicated cameras made specifically for the recording purpose but, different devices can produce different results as well and this is not even including the post-processing on your computer. The better the original quality, the easier it is to work with them which is why a good device in this case a camera is very important to consider.

Most people must be familiar with a wide angle camera already, the fisheye that was once very popular is the example. Due to how they look, it is not the favorite of the general viewing experience but the wide angle lens is still very much present in so many different cameras, including a dash cam. Another example of wide angle is a 360 camera and rather than saying it is a wide angle, a full view is probably what describes it better. As the name suggests, the camera is taking a sphere image.

The camera setup will use two lenses mounted at both sides of the housing instead of one in an action camera such as how the popular GoPro MAX and GoPro 9 are different from each other. One camera is taking a 180 degree image and combining both, we get the 360 experience. Out of the camera itself, they can be viewed from your smartphone and usually companies are giving the app or software to use with the device in order to combine the two footages.

This was once only used and appreciated by a small portion of the population because the camera itself can be costlier than our regular ones yet, after the trend of action cams, there are various companies introducing the device for the general market; GoPro also follow the step with their Fusion camera or Garmin with the VIRB 360. Today it is not as interesting as when the idea was first becoming popular but you can still find some options if interested with the device.

360 camera and VR are closely related to each other because to enjoy the fullest experience you need to have the gear. It is not a must because we can still view it from a regular screen yet, the VR will improve how you see the footage for it feels more realistic. The difference between VR and 360 footage is that VR is computer generated so we can roam around in the space while the other is limited to the camera perspective so in order to make the two more similar, people will also add 3D effects into their footage.

About Insta360 One X2 and Go 2

For those who are already used to regular action cameras, it is great to try this system because it can improve your skill and is adding freedom into whatever you want to do with the footage, overall it gives the user more freedom but also requires more effort to work with. Unlike an action camera, the choice for 360 version is not that many anymore as several brands already stop producing or developing the system. We still hear some prominent names like GoPro and they can be quite expensive.

When talking about 360 cameras, our mind is thinking about this specific brand which is known to have one of the best systems among the rivals and they are Insta360. Even from the name we can already know the focus of the company so it is not surprising to see how they stick to the concept. Just like most companies however, they improve the product from time to time to provide the better option and to stay relevant with the trend or current tech development.

Some of the newest additions in their collection are Insta360 One X2 and Go 2 which are not very far apart from each other in terms of release date. The former was launched last year and the latter was just recently a few months ago. While being the same wide angle cameras, they are not the same and one of the prominent differences is probably because the Go 2 only has one lens instead of 2 like the One X2. So, in short the latter is a super wide angle camera that captures the 180 degree footage.

In terms of ease of use, both are very easy to incorporate in your activities but, the thing about Go 2 is this is probably one of the most compact cameras we have seen that is made for this application. It is like a web camera instead of a 360 or even an action camera. Due to the lack of additional lens, this is more like an action camera and so, it is actually more suitable for people who want to have a compact camera rather than a 360 one.

Insta360 One X2 and Go 2 Design

Being the most interesting part, let’s see the form factor of these cameras first and as you can see, they are very compact. The Insta360 One X2 is already very small and thin that makes it easy to carry or even slip in your pocket while the Go 2 is small enough to be worn over your neck like a necklace. It is almost at the same size as a pen drive which makes the device very convenient in lots of different applications.

Another feature we love from the design is the magnet and yes, the Go 2 has a magnet base that allows it to stick to metal. This way a tripod is not a must anymore for we can just put it on a metal surface nearby and start recording. It can be attached with a carrying thread as well if you need to hang it somewhere, like the dog’s or cat’s collar. But, besides another lens, the Go 2 also lacks a built in display like in One X2.

Insta360 One X2 and Go 2 Specs

Moving further, let’s see the most important part of Insta360 One X2 and Go 2 starting from the basic specs first. We all can expect to capture the largest resolution of video with One X2 because this camera is 5.7K but, it is spreading for the full 360 view which means it is also not as packed as they are in a single lens system. With the Go 2, the maximum resolution is 2280 x 2880 and similarly, the highest resolution can only record at 30 frames per second.

The good side of smaller resolution is it will be friendly to the memory space and thus, we don’t have to worry about filling it up too quickly. If you are going to record one side only, the One X2 is also possible to be used in this setup which is a great step up over the older cameras but the resolution won’t be 5.7K anymore.

Insta360 One X2 and Go 2 Image Quality

Next let’s talk about the image quality but, side by side Insta360 One X2 and Go 2 will be quite similar. When used in the fullest resolution, the image looks amazing, and we do think the color is very pleasing as long as this is for casual use and not when you are going to pixel peeping into the picture. The only drawback is that you can’t take a full 360 footage with Go 2 unlike the One X2 that can record two sides of the point of view or just one.

Insta360 One X2 and Go 2 Features

Lastly on the additional features, both Insta360 One X2 and Go 2 are coming with the same FlowState stabilization so you will see the same level of stabilized footage which we do think is very reliable and in addition they are also using the same app. Our personal favorite feature of Go 2 is the remote because even though it has no built in screen, the charging case has and it can be used as a remote as well up to about 5 meters.

Insta360 One X2 vs GO 2

These two are interesting 360 cameras or more accurately compact cameras because the latter is just a super wide angle type. For the image quality they are very similar especially when the One X2 uses only one of its lenses. The Go 2 is certainly much more compact and gives you a higher freedom in terms of application or how you will set up the unit. But, the ability to capture a full 360 footage can only be achieved with One X2 because you need two lenses to have this type of footage.

- The Pocket Camera Crew: With just one device, shoot first in every direction with super 5.7K 360 capture and then choose your favorite angle later. Or pick just one lens with Steady Cam mode for ultra-stable wide angle footage.
- FlowState Stabilization: Better-than-ever stabilization and horizon leveling algorithms keep your shots steady—no gimbal needed.
- Invisible Selfie Stick: Shoot with the Invisible Selfie Stick and then watch it disappear in your edit. Capture easy drone-like angles and third-person perspectives with the flick of a wrist.
- IPX8 Waterproof: Insta360 ONE X2 is waterproof to 10 meters (33ft). Take it out in a rainstorm or surfing without a case.
- Tiny and Mighty: Thumb-sized action camera that weighs just 1 oz. Uses a powerful 1/2.3” image sensor to shoot crisp 1440p video. Rugged and waterproof to 13ft.
- Mount Anywhere: Wearable camera design. Mount GO 2 anywhere with its magnetic in-the-box accessories and shoot hands-free.
- FlowState Stabilization: Image stabilization and horizon leveling algorithms keep your video steady no matter where you mount GO 2. Action sport ready.
- Multi-Use Charge Case: Comes with a pocket-sized case that’s also a charger, remote control and tripod all in one. Extends battery life up to 150 minutes.

Conclusion

These are incredible cameras and among the best even for action cameras typical applications. We will recommend the One X2 if 360 recording is what you will be using them for but if what you want is a compact action camera then Insta360 Go 2 is a near perfect option.
