The experience usually tells you what to choose next or what to look for when deciding something. Just like a camera that always gets better as the tech is more advanced and the previous models get cheaper. What’s tricky is that not all of us will be prioritizing the same thing since the applications are not always the same as well. However, as a camera, there are various factors that will affect the image quality and ease of use to a certain level.
When it comes to cameras, most people must be already familiar with the megapixel which tells how many pixels the camera has. The more it is, the bigger the file size, the bigger the image can be printed. In professional cameras the sensor size is the most important but in compact cameras like action cam or dash cam which most likely use much smaller sensors, megapixel counts can be used to decide how good the image will turn out. It is not always the same but can be helpful when selecting the options.
The more important part in compact cameras is probably their native resolution. Full HD 1080p is very common but they are starting to get replaced by the higher res 2K or 4K as the amount of devices that support native 4K is also more affordable. The higher the resolution the sharper the image will turn out but, not all action cams will be native in 4K even though they are stated as one. Do look for the true 4K if you will be recording at this resolution.
In addition there is also image stabilization which is a very important feature in any camera that will be used handheld, especially action cameras which native purpose was used for sport and action recording. Not all of them will have the same level of stabilization or tech to support the best performance despite being featured with image stabilization. Do make sure that the camera has a reliable system if you will be using them without gimbal or while in motion.
As a compact camera we do think the charm of action cameras is in their dimension. They are most likely very small or not bigger than your typical office mouse and this makes them able to be installed or incorporated in various different activities. They are usually in rectangle shape but different companies can make different cameras and different installation setup as well to allow the user to be more creative with their footage. In case you are into wide angle, 360 cameras have a very interesting approach for a fuller view with the same setup.

About Insta360 One X2 and GoPro Hero 9
There are plenty of good cameras, especially if you are ready to invest a little bit more and get flagship models from the prominent companies. There are also great options coming from the more affordable alternative such as AKASO V50X Vs Brave 6 but we also have to sacrifice some features or a certain quality of the image. The choice is all yours but make sure that the camera has all the things you need or expect to use.
For those who are ready to spend more and get some of the best action cameras the market is currently offering, brands like Insta360 and GoPro will be two great options to consider. Both are well-known names in the action camera market with their plenty of favorite cameras but they are also famous for different types of users. As the name suggests the Insta360 is used to focusing in 360 degree cameras only while GoPro is not only the one that popularized action cameras but also best known for their regular wide angle options.
However, Insta360 also makes regular cameras such as the Go 2 at a more affordable price and GoPro continues to upgrade their camera to answer the users demand and to keep up with the tech. Currently these companies have their own new flagship which are the Insta360 One X2 and GoPro Hero 9. These cameras are still fresh and were released near each other last year. They are very different with one being a 360 camera and the other being a regular wide angle action camera.
Price wise the One X2 will be the more expensive choice but it makes sense when you realize there are two cameras here for capturing a full 360 degree angle while the Hero 9 only has one. We do think choosing between Insta360 One X2 and GoPro Hero 9 will be very simple because it all depends on what you will be working on. If 360 degree angle footage is in your planning then we highly recommend getting the One X2 but if it doesn’t interest you, let’s save the budget and go with Hero 9.
Insta360 One X2 and GoPro Hero 9 Design
One of the most interesting things about Insta360 is their product design because this company makes their action camera in a stick form rather than the common boxy one. In comparison One X2 will be much narrower than Hero 9 but also two times taller. Both cameras have a built-in screen to let you change the settings or preview the footage but Hero 9 have two of them; one on each side. The front display can be used for self-recording while the menu is accessed from the rear display.
Both are equally compact and another thing you will like is that they are also natively waterproof which means we don’t need the additional case for recording under water and being IPX8, you can safely use them up to 10 meters. The build quality is great for both cameras and they can be installed at the same setup. One X2 is taller so we may need to find the perfect fit in case it will be mounted in a very narrow space.
Insta360 One X2 and GoPro Hero 9 Specs
Now for the most important part, let’s see what Insta360 One X2 and GoPro Hero 9 can offer starting from the basic specs. For starters both of them are capable of recording at maximum 5.7K and 5K respectively. Do note that this resolution is used for 360 degree footage in One X2 while Hero 9 uses this resolution for 155 degree image. If you are not in the mood for a 360 degree angle, we can also record using only one of the lenses in One X2 with maximum resolution of 1440p.
Insta360 One X2 and GoPro Hero 9 Image Quality
Out of the box, both cameras are very much capable at recording amazing video quality, even at the lower resolution of 1080p they are equally amazing. The prominent difference will be the angle itself because your object will look closer in Hero 9 compared to One X2. Another thing that we notice is they also have a different color processing which makes One X2 have more contrast and sharpening when recording at 1080p while the color of Hero 9 is more natural to our eyes.
Next is for the audio of Insta360 One X2 and GoPro Hero 9, in case you decide not to use an external microphone since the option is there as well. In comparison Hero 9 also records a much better audio sound right out of the camera without processing. You will still hear sharp edges and ambient noise like wind from the One X2 but it is much cleaner on Hero 9.
Insta360 One X2 and GoPro Hero 9 Features
Now for the additional features, you can do lots of recording with both cameras, based on what you want to capture. Their image stabilizations are amazing, there is no doubt that they are improved from the previous generation. The limitation of Hero 9 compared to One X2 as a 360 camera is horizon lock which is only possible to match the other when you add the Max Lens Mod. It stills shows the selfie stick so it is not on par yet, the footage looks amazing so it is probably a short drawback.
Insta360 One X2 vs Gopro Hero 9
There are lots of good cameras and both the Insta360 One X2 and GoPro Hero 9 are two of them. It feels like the One X2 is made to be slightly closer to regular action cam while the Hero 9 also adds one of the 360 cameras abilities. They are a great camera on their own with One X2 being the more versatile because we can already shoot with two or just one lens while Hero 9 can only shoot regular wide angle footage.
In higher resolution the color of Insta360 One X2 and GoPro Hero 9 are actually more similar however so if you will be using anything above 1080p we do think they will turn out almost the same or we can also post-process the file later. For the stabilization they are on par but for microphone the Hero 9 is still leading.
There is no bad option between the two, all depends on what you will be using them for. 360 cameras like One X2 is more versatile in general as it now can use just one of its lenses only and for those who are bored of the regular camera, we highly recommend this one so you can play around with the footage or design it as you want to.
