Action Camera and 360 Camera

There are lots of good cameras out there ranging from the small ones located on our smartphones to those meant to be used by professionals. Depending on the purpose or what you want to use this camera for, our choice may vary. It is always best to go for the one that is made for your typical application because not all of us will be working on the same projects and have the same budget to spend. For those who are going to record mostly videos, an action camera or 360 camera can be two great options to consider.

Both are very similar but also different and mostly on how the camera will capture the footage. An action camera is just a compact digital camera and the name action comes with the size of the device itself. They are so compact that they can be mounted on top of the helmet, on your bike’s handlebar, or on your chest with a strap. Unlike a camcorder that requires you to hold the camera all the time or mount it on a regular tripod, they are more versatile in application.

The viewing angle can differ from one camera to the other but usually they are wide angle such as 140 or more and sometimes can be narrower too or adjustable. The camera works like a regular digital camera and you can use it with the app or transferring the file manually to the computer. Chances are the manufacturer will have the app that we can pair with the device.

On the other hand, a 360 camera is also very similar to an action camera but has a much wider viewing angle. Depending on the setup, one camera can only record for up to 180 degree view which means to get the other 180 degree they have to add another camera in the setup. This is why 360 cameras have two lenses mounted at each side of the body while the footage itself will be stitched using the software the company has or third party as you need.

The way that we can capture a full view of the surrounding is what makes it attractive and while we also agree that the footage is not up to everyone’s personal taste, it surely gives this uniqueness to your video. They are also allowing you to design and be the director of the footage because 360 footage is more versatile for editing such as you can change the angle or pan into an object and overall play around with the footage.

About Insta360 One X2 and One R

Both are good options depending on which seems to be more interesting for you and nowadays, 360 cameras are also more convenient because many of them can use only one of the cameras to produce the similar recording like a regular action camera if you will want to do it later. If you are here then we assume that the 360 camera is a new device worthy to try. They are often more expensive than regular action cameras such as Sony HDR AS50 Vs GoPro Hero 5.

When it comes to action cameras, we are talking about GoPro, DJI, or AKASO if you want to spend less but for 360 cameras, our mind instantly thinks about Insta360. This brand, as the name suggests, is one of the main players for the 360 camera ranges and they have a wide collection to offer based on how much you want to spend and how you will want to use the camera. Most of their cameras are very similar however with slight differences on features or resolution.

Some of the best offerings for a 360 setup are the Insta360 One X2 and One R, especially the Twin version. Do note that One R comes in a few setup with only one camera or two cameras and if you want to record a full 360 degree footage, make sure to get the Twin variant. It is currently quite pricey compared to the One X2 and if you want the “action camera” version of it, the regular One R and One R with one-inch lens is the best choice.

In comparison, both cameras are equally capable but if you are aiming for the highest resolution, we do think the One X2 is the winner here and this can be very subjective but we do love the shape and setup of the camera. Both Insta360 One X2 and One R are carrying their own advantages so our choice may vary and if you are seeking for a more versatile setup, the modular One R is probably more attractive.

Insta360 One X2 and One R Design

Before moving further, let’s see the camera shape first and the most unique thing about One R is probably the modular setup. This camera is separated into three parts, one of them is the lens, the second is their screen, and third is the base where they are attached together and for placing the mount. We can change the main lens with a one-inch sensor option or with other mod or variants that can be used with the camera.

Our main concern with how the One R is designed as a 360 camera is the dimension because they are kind of thick, or thicker than the One X2 which means the stitching will most likely be more visible than the thinner One X2 or the original One X. The One X2 here is taller but more compact with a single round display at the front and in general is more tailored towards the 360 recording while it also doesn’t limit the application.

Insta360 One X2 and One R Specs

Moving further, let’s see what the Insta360 One X2 and One R can offer starting from the specs first as it shows you what they care capable of. The model we compared today is the Twin version of One R so you will get the main wide angle camera and the 360 mod in the box. The main camera is shooting 4K footage while if you switch to the 360 mod, it becomes 5.7K but since this covers a wider view, expect to see the less packed pixel as well on the full view of the footage.

On the other hand, spec wise the One X2 is the same for capturing a 360 footage at 5.7K resolution but, the software is upgraded and now we can choose only one lens to record a video, making it similar to the Max by GoPro with its Hero mode. The resolution will be reduced a lot however and while you can record 4K with the One R single mod, this camera is topping at 1440p.

Insta360 One X2 and One R Image Quality

Next let’s see the image quality of Insta360 One X2 and One R because they are not the same. In comparison, the One X2 is the one with better dynamic range and you don’t have to zoom in to see that it also has the better details. We also love how it handles colors here because while for some people it is probably more saturated, it also looks better when viewed on a large or small screen as it is more attractive. We also think the One X2 benefits from the higher bit rate, making the footage looks better.

However, the gap is not like night and day and probably because the two are developed and released near each other, the two are still really good by today’s standard. In addition, you can shoot using one lens only too, so if you want to record an action camera style footage any of the cameras will be a good choice.

Insta360 One X2 and One R Stabilization

Lastly, we want to talk about the image stabilization on Insta360 One X2 and One R because as a camera that will most likely be used only with a handheld tripod, this function is necessary to consider. Thankfully, we don’t see noticeable differences between the two as they are impressively working really well, however, the X2 is also slightly better especially when it comes to reducing the vibration. Without looking at the details, we do think both cameras are handling shakiness very much the same.

Insta360 One X2 vs One R

Both of these 360 cameras are amazing because they are capable of capturing good footage and great for photography too. The difference is noticeable in both video and stills because the One X2 is not only more saturated but also keeps more details and sharper results on the video and photos compared to One R. The stabilization is equally reliable and you can use them with only one of the lenses as well.

- FlowState Stabilization: Better-than-ever stabilization and horizon leveling algorithms keep your shots steady—no gimbal needed.
- Invisible Selfie Stick: Shoot with the Invisible Selfie Stick and then watch it disappear in your edit. -Capture easy drone-like angles and third-person perspectives with the flick of a wrist.
- IPX8 Waterproof: Insta360 ONE X2 is waterproof to 10 meters (33ft). Take it out in a rainstorm or surfing without a case.
- 5.7K 360 + 4K Wide Angle: ONE R Twin Edition transforms on the fly from a 360-degree camera to a wide-angle 4K 60fps action camera. Just swap out the lenses.
- FlowState Stabilization: FlowState achieves gimbal-like image stabilization without the gimbal. Thanks to a new scene-detection algorithm, your footage stays clear and steady even in low light.
- SUPER 5.7K: All pixels are not created equal. The Dual-Lens 360 Mod raises the bar with Super 5.7K resolution, leveraging H.265 encoding, advanced image processing and an AI-powered finishing algorithm to preserve detail and make your footage pop.
- IPX8 WATERPROOF: ONE R is IPX8 waterproof to 5m (16.4ft). Whether you're poolside or on a rainy-day ride, ONE R can handle it. !!! NOTE: ONE R is waterproof after being fully assembled and installed in the included Mounting Bracket.

Conclusion

You can go amazing with any of the cameras but based on the comparison the One X2 is the camera you will want to have if 360 footage is the main goal here. The image quality and video also looks better in this camera and in addition, it also has the better microphone.
