Action Camera and 360 Camera

Digital cameras have been around for quite some time now and with the improvement of smartphone companies’ applications on their product, the need for casual cameras has decreased extremely in the last two decades. The remaining market is still quite strong for the enthusiast and professional line but with how modern lifestyle also brings digital content mainly video and pictures on the internet, there is also a need for a more suitable device to capture whatever you want to show to the people all around the world.

Video content such as recording of an activity like travelling and sports are very popular. People enjoy the adventure from the point of view of its users and the camera is a great tool to deliver the experience to your audience. Image quality is a must to consider when you are producing content for a lot of people or for professional purposes so the camera has to be able to deliver the level of quality you want to have as well.

The choice is abundant out there from a regular point-and-shoot digital camera with fixed lens or ILC system such as DSLR and mirrorless cameras. If your activity is revolving around sports or if you are going to capture the scene from a more unique point of view, the action camera such as Victure AC700 Vs AC800 is probably a wiser choice. This is because their body is smaller and hence can be mounted at a trickier situation or placement such as on top of a helmet or near the wheel of your dirt bike.

Action cameras have been around for quite some time and they are very useful as well as usually have a wide angle so we can capture as many scenes in front of us but, there is another alternative called 360 cameras and as the name suggests, they are capturing a 360 degree angle. Depending on the system, if there is only one lens we will actually get a 180 degree view vertically and if there are two lenses, we can capture a complete 360 degree view at one go.

It is certainly very unique because not all cameras can do the same trick and this can be very useful to show your viewers your point of view and the camera’s point of view thus, we are getting both at once. When installed horizontally they are also more mesmerizing, especially when capturing the top of trees on a forest or the night sky since it gives the sense of we are actually seeing the full view there to enjoy, compared to with regular cameras.

About Kodak PIXPRO SP360 and GoPro

Is a 360 variant better than a regular camera? There is no one “better” here since it all depends on what you are aiming to record or capture and how the camera is handling the image or video and this is why we can have different options. If you are already bored of a regular camera’s view, it is nice to try the 360 variant to give your content a breeze of fresh air and to play around with the new device finding a new angle or a new method to shoot your footage.

Contrary to how it sounds, 360 cameras are not as popular as the regular action cams, probably because they are less versatile and not as friendly with beginners as well. But, we can still find quite the options out there coming from named brands like Kodak and GoPro. It may not be as well-known but these brands do carry a 360 camera in the lineup and if this is your first try on the system, it is a convenient shop from named brands just to make sure they are reliable.

The cameras we are going to compare today are Kodak PIXPRO SP360 and GoPro 360 degree camera or specifically the Fusion model. GoPro has another 360 camera called MAX but this variant is quite expensive in comparison so we prefer the more affordable alternative Fusion. Depending on the setup, the best ability of these cameras will be capturing a fuller image of your activity and not only for sports, they are useful as well as your travel cameras to accompany the smartphone.

A 360 camera will give you that fish-eye and this is probably not going to satisfy everyone yet we can crop them as needed. Between the Kodak PIXPRO SP360 and GoPro 360, it is probably easier to work with GoPro if you plan on recording from both perspective at once since this camera is coming with two lenses in one body while the SP360 only has one so if you are recording for example while riding a bike and want to show the road along with you in the footage, it will be easier to get the footage with the latter.

Kodak PIXPRO SP360 and GoPro Design

Before checking what Kodak PIXPRO SP360 and GoPro cameras can offer, let’s see the unit first and here we can already notice that Kodak only has one camera while the later has two of them when you flip the device. The SP360 here is a 1080p variant and you can find a camera that can take 4K footage as well. In comparison Kodak is very small, it is probably about twice as much as the AirPods 1st gen case in dimension; boxy and compact at 1.6 inch wide, 2 inch tall, and 1.5 inch deep.

GoPro Fusion on the other hand is approximately 2.8 inch wide, 2.9 inch tall, and 0.9 inch thick, using the same waterproof body which is not what Kodak is made with. With SP360 you will need a case but we argue GoPro should add at least lens cover here as it will be prone to damage and debris by leaving it bare like this. Similarly, there are small displays on both cameras to show you their necessary basic information only.

Kodak PIXPRO SP360 and GoPro Specs

Now for the most important part, let’s talk about what Kodak PIXPRO SP360 and GoPro can offer and with the first 360 camera by GoPro, they are already going strong by capturing a very high resolution image since this camera is actually records at 5.2K instead of 4K and the tagline “overcapture” is probably fit the camera really well. The SP360 we compare today is 1080p so in terms of clarity they are going to be true to the spec.

The type of setup will be similar for these cameras when facing up or down but since GoPro uses two lenses already, we can also capture from the back of let’s say the front lens in which if you want to get the same experience then we should add another SP360 at the back and using them to record the same footage at once.

Kodak PIXPRO SP360 and GoPro Convenience

On the ease of use any 360 cameras are not made for beginners because they are tricky and not all of us are familiar with how they will behave or how the footage will turn out to. One thing we want to mention is processing these files into a more solid 360 footage on the computer because stitching takes time and effort, and also skills since none are done in the camera. We can import the footage from the camera and further process it on the computer which most likely will also downgrade the video quality.

The computer software for both Kodak PIXPRO SP360 and GoPro are good but the phone app is just simple to use and has lots of limitations here and there. The main function is to take a view of your shoot whether it is a video or a picture since yes, these cameras can take photos too.

Kodak PIXPRO SP360 and GoPro Experience

From experience, the most difficult part is probably post processing since the cameras are straightforward but to get what we desire may take time to practice. The battery lasts longer in Kodak compared to Fusion and the GoPro camera also needs two memory cards to function so probably we will spend more as well when getting the necessary accessories. The internal microphone of these cameras are working nicely but there is no port to add external equipment for a more professional result.

Kodak PIXPRO SP360 Vs GoPro

Both Kodak PIXPRO SP360 and GoPro are good alternatives if you are bored with the regular action cameras. The type of view may not fit into the majority of people’s preferences nowadays but they are unique and you can try new tricks or new perspectives as well with the cameras. The prominent differences are GoPro is already adding another camera for vertical recording on both sides of the device and it is boosting pixels at 5.2K instead of 1080p.
