Affordable Action Camera

Action camera may not for everyone but it is sure a trendy device to have today that makes you able to capture lots of videos separately without having to rely on smartphone cameras anymore. Their functionality is similar to our older type of camera or digital camera to be exact but of course with new compact and tiny form, it is giving another experience which is not available on the other device. The problem with good action camera is the price, for some can be expensive.

Highly rated products are always pricier than those made for beginners or more casual users and it is the same with action camera. Most top models are usually cost more than $200 or those from Sony like RX0 II can even be pricier than $500 so sometimes it is hard to choose between those popular cameras and the more affordable rivals. While it is true that reliable models always ask more from the pocket, it doesn’t mean we can’t have a good budget alternatives.

With the popularity of action camera, it is getting easier each day to get a model which is not only fairly good but also save more from the budget range because now there are many of them even those under $100. In capabilities they are not going to square up with cameras 3 or 4 times higher but as long as you are not a professional or take the game very seriously, their footage and image quality are actually impressive for the price point.

Action Camera Features

However, we still have to choose carefully because not all of them will have the same capabilities or features so it is still necessary to keep some required information, more importantly if you never use the certain model yet. Just like any camera, action cams best point should be the footage and image quality because it is the main reason why we have one and usually the chip processor, sensor, and effective pixel will be listed on the products so we can guess how good the result is supposed to be.

Affordable action cameras especially those under $100 always struggle with 4K video resolution and it is not surprising considering how low they are offered so if you really need the UHD mode, it is better to allocate a little bit more. In addition, features like adjustable field of view, image stabilization, and voice command or the ability to be submerged under water are some interesting features to look at and will be a great compliment to the camera, making it a more promising device to have.

If you need a camera that can capture the real UHD 4K footage, the SJ8 Pro and Yi 4K+ will be two of the best choice. The latter is no longer named by Xiaomi like the older Xiaomi Yi after the company split themselves but as for the quality, it will be not far different from the one we used to see in the past years. They are definitely not just any cheap camera because these two are not actually made for casual users.

Based on the product’s specification they are marketed for those who are looking for a friendlier alternatives of GoPro and another highly rated action cameras out there because they do deliver a very mesmerizing video footage. While they are not comparable yet to the current best camera like Hero 7 and DJI Osmo Action, many people have found that these two work very reliably, especially on the 4K quality.

SJCAM SJ8 Pro and Yi 4K+ Design

If you ever see Hero 6 by GoPro, you will be familiar with SJ8 Pro since they share the same design and very similar but the Yi 4K+ is very different and more like many newer generation of action cameras with smooth sides and a new face mimicking a chessboard pattern with black and grey small squares. The former is featuring a small analog display at the front as well but when you rotate the device, we can see the same 2-inch main display at the back.

This screen is touch sensitive like many other more expensive action cameras out there and these screen is very intuitive with easy to understand menu and fairly big fonts yet still not as responsive as our smartphone’s display. Their body is not yet natively waterproof so we will need a protective case while recording underwater. SJ8 Pro has some accessories inside including this case but Yi 4K+ doesn’t have any so we may need to spend a little bit more.

SJCAM SJ8 Pro and Yi 4K+ Camera

The action camera performance and quality often based on the processor they are paired with because it is always best to have a higher model being planted inside and for those reliable processing, SJCAM SJ8 Pro and Yi 4K+ are coming with highly capable Ambarella H2 chipset. For comparison, many popular cameras like GoPro and DJI also use this processor but the version is different while GoPro now already start to use their own chipset with the well-known Hero family line.

They also have reliable sensor and it is the same Sony IMX3YY with effective pixel of 12MP for a popping still images. Coming into the video footage, we can record 4K UHD with any of these cameras and the highest frame rate we can do with both of them is 60fps. This frame rate also what set the new Yi 4K+ the most with its original version for it was only topping at 30fps.  As for the field of view, they are using wide 170-degree lens and 155-degree respectively.

SJCAM SJ8 Pro and Yi 4K+ Features

On the additional feature part, SJCAM SJ8 Pro and Yi 4K+ are already coming with image stabilization which is very necessary to help stabilizing your footage when used while the recorder is moving. The SJ8 Pro does have a fixed field of view but the menu is offering digital zoom function when you need to capture a subject closer without physically approaching them. What’s more interesting is that both of them offer an option to capture in RAW format for those who want to spend more time in post-production.

If you want to be more convenient, Yi 4K+ is also offering a voice command so we don’t have to always use the touch screen or push the button when recording, stop recording, or to capture still images. The battery on each of these cameras are 1200mAh and on average will record 4K at 60fps for about an hour or so.

SJCAM SJ8 Pro and Yi 4K+ Performance

As for the performance, it is unfortunate that we can’t use the image stabilization yet in 60fps setting because SJCAM SJ8 Pro and Yi 4K+ only allow us to use it up to 30fps. However, when activated this electronic stabilization is working fairly well yet still not as impressive as HyperSmooth. The footage taken on both cameras are no doubt very good but also different because Yi 4K+ is offering slightly “cooler” tone with sky appear bluer and leaves greener.

However, it is also true that Yi 4K+ also offer more dynamic and able to capture more details from the scenery around you. When recording 4K at 60fps without stabilization, somehow it looks like the former is producing more stable footage. Night recording is producing lots of noise and we better not use any of them at night for the footage will look very poor. Both cameras have wind reduction but SJ8 Pro can’t deactivate this function unlike Yi 4K+.

Comparison

These two camera does work amazingly well for the price range and can be an alternative for the higher model we often see in the market. However, in terms of footage quality, the one that set them apart the most is the color tone itself since SJCAM is warmer and the latter is cooler so it is a matter of preference and 4K+ also capture slightly more details while SJ8 Pro image stabilization at times works slightly better than the other.

In addition, Yi is offering voice command as well for a more convenience but SJCAM have a package with some necessary accessories inside so we can use it right out of the box including for underwater recording.
