Today, just with a single smartphone, people can make a call and record hours of HD videos to share with their family and friends as well as capturing the beauty of nature, right in your hand without needing to carry various gears.
This makes us questioning whether camera and camcorder are still needed today for casual users because all the things we have done in the past with these devices are all possible with just one simple device. There is no fixed answer for everybody because depend on the users’ specific needs, our answer may varied as well. Professionals on one hand will still need a professional gears to create certain results in which consumer-based models are not capable of offering yet also unnecessary to have.
For those who only take photos and videos once in a while or not seriously working on the result, a good smartphones like those flagship models are enough especially for daily use since today’s smartphones are very reliable. However, if you are planning to share the result to other people by posting them on for example one of your social media or personal blog, the quality should be better than for personal use. In this case, we also should use a more reliable device to get a worthy result.
If video blogging is life, an action camera will do a great help because of their nature to accommodate various activities especially, extreme sports or adventure. GoPro is the synonym for action camera and while some people called their compact camera as one, actually there are so many other brands offering the device yet, this popular name is indeed the most recognized due to being the pioneer and its dedication to always offer technologically advanced, high quality cameras.
An action camera is very popular with more people exploring their hobby especially those who travel and spend the time outside discovering gems among others and delivering those footage right in our smart device. Not only smaller and compact so they can be mounted or fitted inside or while being carried when doing certain activities, their image quality is also not to be taken lightly for many of them are amazingly good despite the tiny size. In addition, they are also rugged to stand abuse and waterproof for more extreme activities.
About Sony RX0 II
Before shopping for one, it is always good to try considering all the features or requirements that need to be available in your future camera so then we can eliminate the options quickly and choose more effectively without losing the chance to get the perfect model for your application. Among those many great collections of action camera by different brands, Sony is among the top companies who also offer the device in recent years to compete against the leader GoPro in the current market.
They already have a good reputation as a camera manufacturers for both casual and professional users but they also want to try the action camera market with the RX0 back then in 2017 which now renewed with RX0 II. This model is among the top and best action cameras you can get out there not only because it is made to answer GoPro Hero 7 but also because of the impressively high price range that can be attractive or not depends on how you look at things.
The RX0 II is one of the newest collection in high-end action camera offerings and is even more impressive than the original model with some upgrades to allow the unit to have better low-light performance and greater dynamic range as well as already capable of recording in 4K without feeding it through the HDMI output. If the price range is bothering you, check our GoPro Hero 7 Vs Sony RX0 II here.
Sony RX0 II Design
From a design perspective, this tiny camera is still coming in the same size as the older model roughly measured about 1.63-inch tall, 2.38-inch wide, and 1.44-inch deep while weighing at mere 4.7 ounces. What’s amazing from this boxed camera is it already waterproof up to 33 feet, drop-proof up to 6.5 feet, and even crush-proof up to 440 pounds. It has a small display at the back which can be tilted so we can see it from the front but it is not touch-sensitive.
Sony RX0 II Camera
On the technology inside Sony RX0 II is already coming with the big 1-inch sensor which is capable of capturing 15.3 Megapixel still images and in comparison with the popular Hero 7, it is definitely bigger. However, the field of view is narrower than many other similar action cameras in the market since it only has 35mm equivalent field of view of 24mm. On the footage quality, your camera can record 4K up to 30fps or HD video at 120fps and this is unfortunately slower than GoPro as well.
Sony RX0 II Performance
Moving into the footage quality, when talking about action cameras, our first consideration is usually the video stabilizer and it means digitally. Sony do have SteadyShot stabilization inside but this mode is not as good as what you can experience from the HyperSmooth mode in Hero 7 Black since the video is distorted and all over the place. It is however, perform and give a great result when mounted on a tripod or using a physical stabilizer therefore it is not ideal for “action” and is better for video blogging.
About DJI Osmo Pocket
If your goal with the camera is video blogging in which the recorder can position and see a preview of the footage, RX0 II is a good choice but, talking about video blogging, there is another camera that comes half the price of Sony but the quality is just as amazing and what we mean is Osmo Pocket by DJI. This model is released to accompany the brand’s first action camera but rather than for action, it is better for regular activities.
What’s interesting from Osmo Pocket is it already mounted on the dedicated gimbal which means its image stabilization will be at the top quality. This handheld camera is supported with 3-axis to stabilize the shots and remove the need to purchase additional stabilizer while the result is said to be even better than the Action brother.
DJI Osmo Pocket Design
As a compact camera, this model is as small as your light stick or even smaller, measured at 121.9 mm tall, 36.9 mm wide, and 28.6 mm deep with a very small 1-inch touch screen display integrated into the body to help you see the preview or choose shooting mode. It is however, not as rugged as the Action brother and comes with no waterproofing so you may want to have the case for additional protection. Weighing only at 116 grams, we can easily fit it in a purse or your hoodie pocket.
DJI Osmo Pocket Camera
To deliver a great image and footage quality, your Osmo Pocket is featured with 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor and effective pixel of 12 Megapixel which is smaller than what we get from RX0 II but is sufficient enough for camera at this size. As for the field of view, it is equivalent to 26mm so compared to GoPro it is still much narrower and less effective in action shooting. It is however already capable of recording 4K footage with the same frame rate per second as the Action brother at 60fps while HD video is up to 120fps.
DJI Osmo Pocket Performance
On the video quality which is the most important for a video camera like this one, the 3-axis image stabilization is the best you can get for a camera at this price point. It produces a very nice footage even while used when the recorder is moving and shooting from different angles or side. At first, the camera will track your subject or anything in front of it automatically and even though it’s preamp is not the best, the sound quality is still acceptably good.
Among all the good things about Osmo Pocket, our personal favorite is actually the physical universal port that accept small Lighting and USB type C adapters for your iPhone or Android and when used in this way, we can directly see the preview or transfer files to the phone which is more reliable than the wireless connection.
Now, let’s compare Sony RX0 II with DJI Osmo Pocket. As you may already know, both of them are more for video blogging rather than to keep up with the action camera hype but, in terms of sensor and effective pixel, Sony is offering a better image quality in still position yet it is very subtle but when talking about stabilization and convenience, Osmo Pocket with its own gimbal is the best choice for non-shaky footage.
Sony RX0 II vs DJI Osmo Pocket
All in all, the decision is all yours to make because not all of us will have the same preferences and between the two, they are actually great cameras but, when it is about better footage, we do like Osmo Pocket better.
