Tomtom Bandit: Mounting

Other manufacturers often mimic GoPro’s boxy design when making action cameras, but not Tomtom Bandit. This sports-oriented action camera comes in a compact tube shape which can be mounted on a bike, car, helmet, and any other object that you can think of. Tomtom Bandit also sets itself apart by coming with a weighty body, which makes it feel tough and robust. See also: GoPro Hero Vs Session.

On the top, Tomtom Bandit features an LCD screen but it is only for showing status information. You need to connect the camera to your smartphone in order to see an image preview. On the rear, there is the power button which also serves as a toggle for recording. Note that pressing this button after starting a recording will mark a highlight; you need to press another button to stop the recording.

While Tomtom Bandit is compatible with a wide range of mounting accessories, including some GoPro-compatible mounts, the ones included in the box are limited. You get adhesive mounts for flat and curved surfaces, with one of them having two plastic hoops for use with a GoPro mount. Tomtom Bandit can fit on these mounts easily, but the fit is secure so that the camera won’t fall off accidentally.

Additional adhesive mounts and GoPro-compatible mounts are sold separately. Among them, there is a tripod adapter, handlebar mount, board mount, wrist mount, pole mount, and 360-degree rotating mount. Also, there is a floating cover, 50-m waterproof lens cover, and remote control.

Tomtom Bandit: Mobile App

Tomtom Bandit vs GoPro Hero 5 come with very different capabilities. Tomtom Bandit is more of a point-and-shoot camera. It doesn’t have many manual settings, and it doesn’t offer filters, scene modes, or zoom functions. However, it has a built-in GPS to track your location, and it has Bluetooth to connect with external sensors. Later, you can use the iOS mobile app to overlay the data on your videos.

You can connect Tomtom Bandit to a Bluetooth Smart heart rate sensor. There is also an optional external power cable. Unfortunately, it can’t connect to any speed or cadence sensor. You can, however, connect an external mic by using a proprietary peripheral.

The mobile app is available for Android and iOS. However, the Android version is a little bit more limited. You can only overlay the data from the GPS and sensors by using the iOS version.

Nevertheless, once the camera is connected to your smartphone over Wi-Fi, you will be able to see a live preview, the remaining battery, and the remaining storage. You can also start and stop recording, switch recording modes, and adjust the camera’s settings remotely.

There are some editing functions. You can stitch your clips together into one video. The result can be saved in the local library or shared via email, Facebook, Vimeo, or any other app that has been installed in your mobile device.

Tomtom Bandit: Image Quality

If you compare the image quality of Tomtom Bandit vs GoPro Hero 5, you will see that there are some notable differences. Tomtom Bandit isn’t bad at all, but its image quality is still inferior compared to that of GoPro Hero 5. It does have a longer battery life.

The image quality of Tomtom Bandit is quite polished – better than most other competitors in the market. There is plenty of detail, and the colors look solid and accurate. However, the 4K footage tends to get rolling shutter symptoms, especially when recording fast action. The 1080p footage is generally better and much more usable, as it can record at 60fps in this setting.

The company claims that the battery can provide 3 hours of continuous shooting per charge. When tested, the battery life is indeed very good, although enabling the Wi-Fi continuously will still reduce that number quite drastically.

Tomtom Bandit is not particularly good for shooting still images, mostly because of the very limited manual controls. Despite the very mediocre 4K performance, the 1080p performance is still very good. This action camera will appeal to sports enthusiasts who want to show-off their GPS and heart rate data in nice visuals on their videos.

GoPro Hero 5: Mounting

GoPro Hero 5 has been around for some time, and it is now available at a much more affordable price point than when it was first released. It comes with a lot of improvements from its predecessors, including the ability to record in 4K at 30fps and a powerful image stabilization.

Because of that, GoPro Hero 5 is now a very attractive option for people who want to record 4K videos while still being efficient with their money.

This camera still retains a rectangular shape, but it is several millimeters larger than the previous model, GoPro Hero 4. Also, it is now coated in a rubberized material, which enhances its handling and slip resistance. On the rear, there is a 2-inch touchscreen for image preview and control.

One of the coolest things about GoPro Hero 5 is that it is waterproof to 10m without requiring any additional housing. The battery and connection ports are secured by tight covers.

So, you won’t need to worry when the camera is exposed to rain or splashes, or when you want to go swimming in a relatively shallow pool. An additional housing is still available for deeper dives, though, and will allow you to go as deep as 60m underwater.

GoPro Hero 5 only comes with a standard adhesive mount. The other mounts are sold separately. There is a wide range of options from GoPro as well as third-party manufacturers, so finding a mounting accessory for your purpose won’t be difficult.

GoPro Hero 5: Mobile App

As mentioned above, Tomtom Bandit vs GoPro Hero 5 have very different features. With GoPro Hero 5, there are three different apps that you can use for different purposes. You can connect the camera to your smartphone via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi.

With the GoPro app, you can do the usual things like seeing a live preview, adjusting settings, and transferring files. You can also select photos and videos to be shared. In addition, it has the ability to snatch high-resolution still images from videos.

The Quik app is available for Android, iOS, Windows, and Mac. It will allow you to add soundtracks to your videos, apply effects and transitions, and sync the video to the tempo of the music. It comes with 28 presets, and you can add layers for title slides and text overlays.

Then, there is the Splice app, which is only available for iOS. It has advanced editing functions. You can trims and stitch clips, add filters, apply transition effects, and play specific clips in slow-motion. You can also add title slides, text, mix multiple soundtracks, and fine-tune the audio.

GoPro Hero 5: Image Quality

The overall performance of GoPro Hero 5 is really great. You can record 4K videos at 30fps, and the results are smooth and detailed. You can also record in 1080p at 60fps to minimize motion blur when recording fast action. 1080p/120fps and 720p/240fps settings are available for super slow-motion videos.

The colors look accurate, solid, and vivid. The dynamic range is really good. Because of that, some professionals even use GoPro Hero 5 for serious photography. There are manual controls that will allow you to fine-tune the images. Also, GoPro Hero 5 already has RAW support, so you can save your shots in the RAW format and enhance them later in post-production. There is also a Wide Dynamic Range mode, which is GoPro Hero 5’s HDR, and it will increase the details across shadows and highlights.

The image stabilization also deserves some praise. Although it is only available in resolutions up to 1080p, the performance is very good. It can minimize blur effectively so that the footage will look smooth and stable enough to be watched comfortably.

The average battery life when recording in 4K is about 60 minutes. This is pretty good. If you record in 1080p, you can extend the battery life to about 90 minutes. Avoid enabling the Wi-Fi continuously when it is not needed, as it will drain the battery.
