Video Recorder or Action Camera

Technology is improving fast and as the end consumer, sometimes we feel left behind if not as well upgrading our devices. However, no matter how trendy those new releases may look, shopping should be decided based on each user’s need so we don’t waste money on something we will rarely use especially those expensive, high-end models. Our today’s topic mainly revolve around camera because who doesn’t like to take pictures or videos with the easy access to social media an unlimited choice to share our works.

Especially for videos, video blogging is very popular today and it is sure an interesting market to look at because besides our classic video recorder, there is a new more versatile choice called an action camera. Both of them are classified as video camera but in a different form of their own as there are some parts separating them from each other. We are sure that almost all of us are familiar with an action cam nowadays but the device is not only popular because it is fairly new.

Compared to our traditional or let’s say classic video camera, an action cam won’t weigh you down when travelling or adventuring for most are just as small, about as big as a credit card. This small form making them versatile enough for different mounting so there is no weight and bulky size to install in your helmet or chest strap; it is also easy to put in your backpack strap and record while exploring. Video quality are pretty similar in both cameras.

But, when it comes to image stabilizer, many high-end action cams are working very impressively, probably because it is in their main function so companies usually put much effort in delivering the best stabilizer for their units.

Affordable Action Camera

However, similar to everything else, one issue we often have to deal with an action camera is the price since best models are mostly expensive, despite not as pricey as many other professional video cameras. This made a new market for those who are not ready yet to commit to their hobby or beginner with less fortune to spend so today we have both great and expensive cameras as well as the cheaper counterparts with sometimes questionable worth.

Price does decide everything but if it is just for casual activities or users who need to have a backup camera for their main smartphone while traveling or for daily use, those below $100 is already a great choice. This price range mostly doesn’t offer UHD resolution yet but the 1080p videos are fairly good depending on the model. On the other hand if you are more serious about the activity, we do think it is wise to invest a little bit more especially if you will share the results for mass viewers.

About Yi 4K Plus and GoPro Hero 7

While it is true that great models always have a high price range as well, it doesn’t mean we need to spend much to get a reliable option for there are so many alternatives out there that we can try and see if they can fulfill your preferences or not. GoPro is a pioneer when it comes to action camera and everybody knows that their cameras are improved over time, providing the users with the latest technology and more importantly, amazing video quality.

As the competition in the market is getting heavier, there are lots of new companies competing with each other and one of them is Yi which we used to know as a part of Xiaomi. The company then separate itself in 2016 so we call it as it is today yet, the products quality is just as good as they were first introduced several years back then. Yi and GoPro are two nice options for anyone who is looking for reliable action cameras with amazing video quality.

They also have quite the options to offer but if you are ready to commit into the hobby or plan to get the best models from each brand, we do think Yi 4K Plus and GoPro Hero 7 are going to worth the price. Both of them are not beginner friendly due to the price range but as price never lies, their capabilities are among the top so it is not surprising to see them among the best action cameras we can get today.

Overall they are quite similar to each other but the Hero 7 in our article today is the Black or the most expensive version for it has both Silver which is actually dark grey in color and White which is actually light grey in fashion choice. Yi 4K Plus is an upgraded model of the 4K version that you can check on our SJCAM SJ8 Pro Vs Yi 4K but it also has a little brother Yi Lite for those with less budget to spend.

Yi 4K Plus and GoPro Hero 7 Design

In terms of fashion, Yi 4K Plus and GoPro Hero 7 are very similar to each other since they are sporting a more modern version of action camera with smooth rubbery body and no longer have textured sides or a mode buttons located on the face. GoPro replace this space with a single small analog display to view some of its stats from the front while Yi is keeping the camera simpler with a chessboard patterned front face. Overall, GoPro has smoother edges compared to a rather sharp Yi.

When you rotate these cameras, the rear display is already touch sensitive but when you compared them to each other, it is also seems that Yi has slightly wider screen. They are responsive but not as fast as our smartphone yet while day viewing is still visible in any of these models. Both of them are rugged in design but what you may want to take note is Yi doesn’t made this camera to be natively waterproof so definitely put the protective case before going to the pool.

Yi 4K Plus and GoPro Hero 7 Camera

As any other cameras, video and image quality is what matters in Yi 4K Plus and GoPro Hero 7 but, before we are talking about the real results, let’s see what they are paired with to achieve those amazing footage. Processor is a very important part in a camera and GoPro actually used Ambarella in the past similar to Yi 4K Plus with its Ambarella HC2 SOC but in recent releases or specifically since Hero 6, they are moving with their own custom GP1 processor.

This new processor is designed to accommodate the new features we can enjoy in this camera that we can’t try yet with Hero 6. As for the sensor, similarly, both of them are coming with Sony 1/2.3-inch type of sensor but GoPro has the IMX277 while Yi 4K Plus has the IMX377 with the same effective pixel at 12MP. These combinations are allowing the camera to record 4K UHD at 60fps but Hero 7 is improving the lower resolution or 1080p to be smoother as well at 240p for those amazing slow motion experience.

Yi 4K Plus and GoPro Hero 7 Features

Besides the reliable video footage quality, Yi 4K Plus and GoPro Hero 7 are also rich in features especially for those with more experience because they are allowing users to live stream from the device, capturing RAW photo format for those who want to spend more time doing the post production, and of course the desirable electronic image stabilization. What’s unique about Hero 7 EIS is it used HyperSmooth new technology which is claimed to be on par with using gimbal.

Yi 4K Plus and GoPro Hero 7 Performance

When it comes to performance, Yi 4K Plus and GoPro Hero 7 are equally amazing compared to many other cheaper models out there, but the first thing we notice is the color because you will see that Yi auto white balance will seems colder and in general GoPro will look warmer so sunsets will seems yellow and not white. Outdoor shooting with them show Yi to brighten some of darker parts so we can see more while GoPro keep those places hard to see.

Moving indoors, Hero 7 is working faster in light transition and while it keeps shadowy areas dark out there, surprisingly the camera works better in providing more coverage indoors. Image stabilization can’t be activated at 4K setting in Yi so the footage will be shaky but in lower resolution, the HyperSmooth shows a better stabilization by keeping the footage easy to watch yet, Yi also did a good job but less impressive. When it comes to audio, Yi will give you louder sound but GoPro eliminates background noise much better.

Comparing Yi 4K Plus and GoPro Hero 7 is great so we can see which camera have the upper hand but in our opinion they are a very capable action camera to bring home. Hero 7 seems to win in more parts and we do like the color nuance in this camera better because it looks livelier and the color does pops up more while keeping the details. The Image Stabilization works like wonder in Hero 7 even when used at 4K and while the user is walking or running.

Another favorite is it records sound better than Yi 4K Plus for it is cleaner, less wind noise or background noise that can get quite annoying sometimes by interfering our speech. Additionally, Hero 7 is already waterproof right out of the box so we don’t have to be wary when accidentally dropped it in the pool even without the case.
