Action Camera Pros

Compact camera was very well described as a trendy device we used to adore in the 90s and early 2000s because as opposed to what we know in the past, they become friendlier to many of us due to the advanced technology. It is also the same with video camera or camcorder because they were so hyped back then yet today, it seems that many people have moved forward to action camera which is not only newer but also more capable at some parts.

Like dedicated video recorder, not every one of us will need an action camera since the common casual users probably will be fine with only smartphones camera for many of them are already very capable today especially those priced higher. However, an action camera sure excel in terms of usability because just this morning, we see a motorbike rider mount one on top of his helmet while riding in which the exact activity or purpose we are not very clear.

Action camera is very small and compact, not bigger than our palm so almost anything can be mounted with one whether it is helmet or chest strap. Unlike regular camcorder which usually offer regular field of view, many action cams are offering ultra wide view so it can capture more of whatever presented in front of its lens. In addition, action cameras also comes with various accessories to make it possible when working with water or even already waterproof out of the box.

Action Camera Features

If you are interested to buy an action camera, it is always best to look at some points in the product in which you will be focusing because not all of them are made to be the same and we also have a budget issue for great cameras mostly also come in an expensive price range as well. The most important part of a camera is always the video quality and still image so you may want to see what sensor or chipset used to get the best quality out of the unit.

Some useful features like image stabilization, an ability to adjust the field of view or zooming can be added as well because they will ease the operation in real life. Some action cameras are packed with the necessary accessories for mounting options that may increase the actual price but it is convenient for we don’t have to make another purchase or look for those suitable case or mounting system that we can use with the unit. In addition, if you have more budget, we can also invest on a gimbal to improve the footage quality.

About Yi 4K and Yi Lite

Good action camera or those currently dubbed as the best model today will not come in an affordable price for many of us but they sure offer more than just good footage so we do recommend them for those more serious users or anyone with the fortune to afford one. If you are a beginner or just want to get a reliable action camera, there are so many other options out there while not the best but already enough for most activities.

Talking about good quality action camera that won’t break the bank, Yi is one of the best options to go because even when the brand is still together with Xiaomi, they already offers nice alternatives with very affordable price. After the company split itself from Xiaomi in 2016, now we called it only as Yi but their action camera is still as popular as ever, moreover with the release of new models to provide alternatives for GoPro expensive flagship model and other big players in the market.

Currently, Yi have various action cams in their catalogue and two among the most popular are Yi 4K and Yi Lite which as the name suggests a very close brother, also with the higher brother that we have talked in SJCAM SJ8 Pro Vs Yi 4K+. They in general, are very similar to each other as well because coming from the same family and the latter which is also more affordable is a less in capabilities compared to its big brother because first, it is still not native in 4K yet.

Many people are loving these cameras not only because of the fairly low price range but also because of their footage quality because as you may already know, they are amazing for a compact camera like this and already live up to even those in higher price range. What we are not very fond of Yi cameras including Yi 4K and Yi Lite is their package because we have nothing inside except for the main accessories; no waterproof case and no mounting system.

Yi 4K and Yi Lite Design

The first time we see these action cameras, in a glance they do look like the same unit because both on the form factor and design they are practically identical if you remove the model name printed at the face. What makes them different instantly is the black ribbon going straight across the front face of Yi Lite which is absent in its big brother. The measurement for both cameras are the same at 65mm wide, 42mm tall, and 30mm thick including the lens housing.

The overall finish of Yi 4K and Yi Lite are smooth and we do like this type of surface better for mostly we will use it with a case. Rotating the camera, they both come with standard 2-inch main display at the back that is bigger in the 4K model but they are already touch sensitive which is great for it means easier operation as well compared to the classic buttons. The body of these cameras are not natively waterproof so make sure to purchase a protective case before playing with water.

Yi 4K and Yi Lite Camera

Just like when looking for any camera, action cameras also have sensor and chipset to process the image that will affect your video and image quality so make sure to check this part as well. The big brother Yi 4K is already paired with Ambarella A9SE chipset with 800MHz dual-core.Cortex-A9 ARM CPU, the kind we used to see on older Hero cameras by GoPro before they moved to their own processor while the Lite version is coming with Hisilicon Hi3556V100.

As for the sensor, they also use different model for the higher model use Sony IMX377, a 1/2.3 12 megapixel CMOS sensor and on the other hand the latter use Sony 16 megapixel CMOS BSI sensor. Both of them are including the option to record 4K video but the Lite version is interpolated and its top video mode is at 20fps while the 4K version in its big brother is 30fps. In addition, the 1080p on this model is also rated up to 120fps in which Yi Lite version is topping at 60fps.

Yi 4K and Yi Lite Features

Both of them are featured with the important image stabilization and the Yi Lite can use this function at 1440p while the 4K version is a bit better by offering its 2.7K quality; not yet with 4K video. Similarly, Yi 4K and Yi Lite have useful model like Time Lapse, Slow Motion, and Burst mode for taking still image but the former also have Loop mode. As for the field of view, the little brother can only capture video at Wide angle but the former is also offering Ultra Wide or Medium in some of its video modes.

Yi 4K and Yi Lite Performance

As for the performance, navigating menu in Yi 4K is faster and the bigger display does a good job in providing more space to touch. On the video quality since the former has a better frame rate per second, its video appear to be smoother as well but the first thing we notice is the color nuance in both camera that can be so different with the Lite version comes out cold and the 4K version comes out warmer so it can be a matter of taste.

The still images also offer the same nuance but despite Lite version offers 16MP sensor, we feel like the image quality has more details in the 4K version. The last is image stabilization and while the 4K camera is claimed to have better stabilization, in our opinion they both works similarly good yet, not as good as the HyperSmooth.

Yi 4K and Yi Lite are two nice options for anyone who wants to spend less but still get good footage quality yet it is also true that these close brother are not identical in terms of quality because the 4K version is already native in this video setting, offer more frames per second, and have warmer nuance on both its video and still image. In addition, it also has wider main display to allow better navigation for the menu.
